MG Racing Results 1963-1978
More-or-less complete results for the MGB, MGB GT, MG C, and a few prototypes (notably the lightweight MGC GTS's with special alloy body panels) in the World Championship series from 1962 to 1978, as well as other classic races and rallyes of the era. The MGA, Midget, and other MG cars were also very successful in racing (the MG name was built largely on its achievements in racing) but they are outside the scope of this project.
Please join the discussion in the MG Motorsport Forum.
The success that these often only moderately tuned MGBs had in racing serves as testimony to their balance of performance and reliability. MG has always had to struggle against their parent company's bean counters to race and when BMC merged to become BL in 1969 and the Competitions Department at Abingdon was dissolved, factory MG motorsport came to a halt. Fortunately, MG has always had a close relationship with private entrants. For a full history of MG racing, rallying and record setting read one of the definative MG histories, MG by McComb or MG The Untold Story by David Knowles (available in the Store)

I'm not sure how the connection was made but in 1966, Marty wound up co-driving my Redex MGB in the six-hour Sundown Grand Prix at Mosport. We had a great race finishing second to the George Eaton and Craig Fisher pairing in a 427 Cobra. The only incident that marred our race was when "The Prince of Darkness" aka Joseph Lucas kicked in and shut down all head and driving lights just as I topped Corner 2. Terrifying! Frantic consultations in the pits resulted in Marty shrugging his shoulders and suggesting we turn off the lights going up the back straight to give the electrics a rest! - Gary Magwood | ||||||
