I think one of the reasons I dont go very far in the MGC is the worry of what if it breaks down !

I used to have personal cover with RAC, but when I asked for help and gave the REG they said I wasnt covered because the car was more than 20 yrs old, despite being restored less than 3 yrs ago to better than new.

So are there any UK based MGC owners who have Classic car breakdown/recovery (AA, RAC, Greenflag etc) insurance and are there any reccomendations. I prefer to have my C and my Leaf on the same cover.

TIA

John

I have my modern car on AA personal cover and it covers any car including my MGB as they didn't say no when I had carb problems but had sorted before they arrived. Carolenash ins also gives breakdown cover as part of their ins for the just my b... ( think its axa breakdown)

Hi

I just add breakdown cover as an option to my classic car insurance - via Lancaster Insurance.

I can't immediately see that the RAC terms and conditions exclude cars over 20 years old in the UK and I have used their recovery services for the C. unfortunately, within the last 2 years. Cover in the rest of Europe might be restricted though again I don't immediately see it in the Ts & Cs. Might it have been an untrained phone operator who gave that information?

Afternoon,
Like David and others have had no issues at all regarding RAC and over the last 25 years where needed both home and abroad (shipping back) they have been exceptional. There are different grades and ours does cover European countries.
It was slightly different when we went to the US in our C!
Be good to see your car at MGC 50 we should have other ex Police C's there. Just go on to the MG Car Club website and click on to the MGC register micro site there you will find our online booking form and latest information on the event. Anymore info you require then contact ginnycartmell@btinternet.com and we will be pleased to help you.

Well thankyou all for the tips and suggestions. I used to have RAC cover and the terms of the cover I had said, no cover over 20 yrs old. I had a discounted cover through my employer - perhaps that is why it had limited cover.

Then the insurance I got with my everyday car offered free breakdown cover, but named car only. So I cancelled the RAC cover. My renewal for the everyday car then stopped the free cover, so I am looking for personal cover so I would be o.k whatever I drove.

I now have a couple of options, so hopefully will be able to get to the 50yr anniversary event next year and have already expressed an interest but for the Saturday only.

John,

Living where we do, a zillion miles from anything remotely resembling classic car events we have over the past 32 years always covered our classics ( and moderns, once their three year warranty runs out) on Green Flag "recovery only to our home".

From experience, ( three times in thr rover 16, each 300-400 miles from home, once with the C, just 27 miles away), never an issue and a small annual cost ( about £80) for peace of mind.

Moderns we cover as said above " Total Protection" Green Flag which incidentally covers all Europe. ( about another £80.00)

If you look at my personal profile there is a picture of the C being recovered three years ago...( el cheapo condensor)

We have covered huge mileages and usually carry spares and a tool kit!!

Hope to see you at the 50th. I see Barrie and Shaun have put you in the picture to potentially resolve your hotel issues...

After that huge rebuild you did on your C how can you NOT have confidence in it getting you where you need to be without issue?
