Question For all you painters out there;
I bought a LVLP spray gun for painting, one that will run with may mid size compressor.
It comes only with a 1.4mm tip. When I look at most guns recommended for primer the tip is 1.8mm Can I spray all primers with the 1.4mm tip or are there some that have too many solids (ie high build) and wouldn't flow properly?
Thanks

You may have issues with thin coats and too fast of a dry time. You will need to thin the primer about 25% more to use the 1.4mm tip, but you should get a nice smooth finish!!! Another option is to go but the cheapest ($30) spray gun you can find for the primer. I have a generic harware store gun that I use for primer and a Sata for the top coats.

Most manufacturers of primers, finishes tell you which tip and what pressure to use.
The big thing is to clean the gun properly. I leave a bit of lacquer thinner in the gun and remove the nozzle and put it in the gun.
A good gun that you can buy maintenance parts for is worth the extra. Different sizes of tips can be bought. The DeVilbiss HVLP gun that I have was worth the extra.
A PA HVLP is used for primer. The DeVilbiss is used for finish work.
The lower cost HVLP needs to held much closer to the surface. This means that the overlap is harder to get correct.
The DeVilbiss is held 9" to 12” away and gives a consistent 10" t0 12" pattern and flow. This makes it easier to get the finish to flow on even. With the good gun you can see the finish flowing. The PA HVLP is much harder to use.

I use my Sata with a 1.4 tip for both primer and topcoat.. If you thin the primer sufficiently, there is no problem blowing the solids out..( I use Dupont urethane 2 part high build primer) you can lay on a really nice flat coat..so you end up sanding less paint off!! $$$ saved...
I sometimes think I could just polish it right out of the gun, and it would look like a top coat in the primer grey MGB color...
I think that keeping spray equipment clean is one of the keys to success with this work and not getting frustrated.... every time I use the gun, I break it down and clean everything to as new with laquer thinner, reassemble and put away. It is tedious!!
By the way I used 1 gallon of urethane to completely paint inside and out ..my 65 B.. and I still have some left. Thats how effective a HVLP gun is.

Thats a pretty blue Marty.
I think having a cheap second gun ofr primer isn't a bad idea as well. Most of this poly primer almost goes on as dry spray anyway. The poly two par primer is one of the best thing to come down the pipeit's so thick it acts a filler for light imperfections and prep sanding. Just get a good coat of primer on the car, most of it will end up in the floor anyway from wet sanding.
