I'm interested in using either POR-15 Blackcoat or Chassis Coat Black for my underhood components, but I don't want to spend $26 a pint on something that I can't confirm is close to factory-original. I e-mailed POR-15, and asked if they have paint-chips or sample-swatches of these products that they could send me, but apparently they do not offer this service . Have any of you tried POR-15 Blackcoat or Chassis Coat Black, and if so, could you show me pictures of what you painted with it? A tiny dab of the paint on a piece of card would be even better, but pictures would work just fine. Currently I am using Eastwood's Underhood Black for my underhood components, and am totally disappointed with the colour, and durability (It's this really flaky satin paint, that's made to mimic the American cosmetic underhood-black coatings, but looks totally out of place on an MGB.). I'm interested in trying POR-15's black paints, but I don't want to waste my money on something that is just like what I'm already using. Thank you for your time, and any assistance you can provide......

While I don't have pictures, I've used the POR15 black chassis paint on my FFR, and I think it would be too reflective for use under hood....It will hold up very well, however, and I highly recommend it for areas that are not seen all the time...If applied properly, on a clean surface (even with rust), it is almost bullet proof....In fact , POR15 likes rust, and stops further corrosion on that surface.

You might want to take a look at Kimball-Midwest (they have a website) - They have a good variety of rattle-can paints. They are based in Columbus. I have no affiliation with this outfit, but I have used their products and like them a lot!

But, according to their website (I believe), POR-15 first them chassis black for top-cote. They say you better like the look because if you don't-good luck taking it off.


Ed-did you brush or spray. What type brush and/or spray. I'm going to redo the frint x-member this spring and apply POR-15 and chassis black

This is my 1967 VW pan two days after painting. POR-15 is worth the money but do the prep!

Nothing is likely to precisely match the original paint because they don't make that type of paint anymore. Besides, it was often applied thin and sloppy.

I haven't used Black Coat but I have used Chassis Coat and it gives a nice believable finish. I'm out of town at the moment but I'll try to dig up a photo on my laptop this evening. I think you will be satisfied with the Chassis Coat overall. It isn't as durable as the POR15 beneath it but still at least as durable as any regular paint I've used.

Ryan, is your VW frame JUST painted with POR-15 in the picture, or is it top-coated with either of the products mentioned? Looks purdy either way .

Steve, thanks for the help, I'd appreciate the pictures whenever you can access them. I understand that the EXACT factory colour for the underhood components is neigh-on impossible to replicate, but I'm just looking for something that is a pretty close match.

Tim, I was actually born in Columbus! I'll make sure to take a look at that website more thoroughly....... I'll ask my Uncle (Who still lives in Cols.) whether or not he's got experience with their products.........

Here is a picture of the POR15 Gloss black on my crossmember. This is about 24 hours later when it was dry as a bone.
And a picture of the engine block with POR15 MG Maroon.
(Note, the valve cover was actually sprayed with duplicolor dark canyon red)

Motor

I've used both. The Chassis Black does a nice flat finish and (in my opinion) lays down better and is more foregiving than POR-15. In terms of finish, I like the flat black and the finish is nice. It's really hard to get pictures of black paint to show much...

Eastwood's Satin Original? Satin Extreme? It doesn't look like gloss............ I'm going with the 2K Gloss Ceramic Chassis black for my front crossmember, and other high-wear components. I'm talking about POR-15 Chassis Coat Black paint, which actually isn't a true chassis-coating product like the Eastwood's, but a top-coat for POR-15 rust preventative paint; which is supposed to mymic the "Correct as Original...... Satiny Semi-Gloss Finish........ For Underhood and Chassis Components for cars produced in the USA from the early 1950's to today."...... I'm just trying to find out if this stuff is any better (More durable and original.) then the Eastwood's Under-Hood Black paint that I've been using up to this point.

The Chassis Coat black is a very fine paint.

Very durable, very nice semi-gloss paint.

ALL of their products far exceed all expectations. They're great!
