I'm looking for someone in the Southeast that can rebuild my 1973 MGB tube-type differential. The car is drivable so I can take the car to the mechanic. The differential is very noisy. Alternatively, I'm looking for a replacement differential in very good condition for wire wheels.

Gary, it wouldn't hurt to check out diesel tractor trailer repair shops. They may know how or be able to give you a contact.. Ring and pinion mesh is a very precisioned skilled art. Maybe John at Quantum mechanics can help or leed you. Someday this will be a headache for MGB owners as the supply of good used ones dry up. I just found a good replacement for my spares. Probably the cheapest route. Good luck.
PS. I have a contact in NC on a rolling shell.

Least expensive route would be to locate a 68-75 wire-wheel Salisbury axle assembly.
First try would be local car clubs with MG members (Peachtree)
For salvage yards, might try Mathews in Birmingham, AL, McLeod in Maumelle AR, MidTown Auto in Syracuse NY, ...
For repairs check with local driveline shops, these usually cater to heavy commercial trucks, some do automotive work as well.

I would also suggest a local off road shop. Jeep guys are always swapping out ring and pinions as they fit larger tires, so these guys end up with a lot of experience setting up rear ends. You may have to work with them on getting parts, and maybe tech specs, but as far as experience in setting up the actual meshing and preloads they should have that down pretty well as it's common to all live axles.

First off,
1) What is the noise?
2) When is it loudest?
3) Does it change w/ road speed?
3) If you pull the emergency brake while maintaining about 40-50 MPH does the noise change? Meaning axle bearings could be bad noisy, if noise quietens.
4) Have you tested the driveshaft for u-joints stiff or WSO?
5) Have you tested the Pinion flange for loose rotational play, which could be axle gear shims WSO if clunking on /off throttle..

1. The noise is a grinding / screeching sound
2. It keeps getting louder the faster I go until I hit about 30-35 and then it stays about the same
3. See #2
3. Have not done that, but both axle bearings were replaced and didn't help
4. New u-joints didn't help
5. Differential was clunking. I replaced the shims myself which solved the clunking, but no help with the noise
i AMS 4u thanked glcaines for this post
