Hi Folks,
I just purchased a nice 1974 mgb shell and 1975 engine and I have no idea how to transport it to my home 70 miles. Unfortunately, I have no hitch on my SUV.
I do have access to a trailer, but no truck. Any suggestions?

U-Haul rents pickups and trailers inexpensively. That's the easiest way by far.

Is the suspension removed from the shell? That makes it harder... I was lucky enough to borrow a lift truck to transport mine to the paint booth. The shell fit right on the back of the truck! thumbs up

Home Depot rents trucks... Not sure if they have a hitch though.

U-Haul will sell you a nice hitch (and install it too!). Maybe it is time to get one on your SUV?

No nice neighbors??

Sorry to sound negative, but if you can't figure out how to get the parts home, not sure you should be taking on that project. Once home, these big things still need moved around safely, are you set up for that kind of work?

I made up a "stand" using 2 x 6 lumber with castors from Harbor Freight. With help from the seller and my helper, we lifted the shell on to the stand and then rolled it up the ramps into the flatbed trailer. The stand served as my work stand for the bodywork. The truck can be rented from U-haul or Enterprise.

Put a hitch on your SUV and use the trailer you have access to. I hitch is a good thing to have-or a pickup truck

What Gerry said.
An SUV without a hitch is like a bull without balls.

Installing an aftermarket hitch on an SUV should be a very simple first project. Believe me, you will use it again.

Getting into semantics. Is it a rolling shell? Or, are the front and rear suspension missing. If it's a rolling shell, you can flat tow, or dolly it. I've done both.
If the suspension is missing and you can get the trailer, you need four people and some 2x4 lumber. Pick the shell up and place it on the trailer, using the lumber to lift it and protect the trailer floor.

The last time I hauled a bare shell, it was loaded onto the trailer with a forklift, the trailer was borrowed and I towed it with my dad's station wagon. To unload the shell, I temporarily installed front and rear suspension, so I could roll it off the trailer and under a patio where I could work on it.

I was much younger then.

Shortly thereafter, I got my own truck and trailer and have lived happily ever after.

Kelvin.

Do you have Angies List in Ontario? If you don't want to do all the work yourself and are not terribly cost conscious, it might be worth a look to see what the towing companies offer.
I would guestimate $400 USD to get it done.

"Gerry said" in Post #8 what "Paul said" in Post #4... LOL

Doesn't anyone ever read the previous responses before posting? This is so common on this forum...

Step 1: hire an Uber to get to where your parts are.
Step 2: assemble shell, engine, tranny, and 2 axles into working MGB configuration.
Step 3: drive home.
