Hello everyone I am new to the group I am Alex and have a 57 MGA in maybe 1/10 condition. It was my grandfathers car before he passed and he always dreamed of restoring her and sporting her out i expect to get plenty of flack but I plan to keep and restore the body but put it on another more modern vehicle. I would like to have a more modern braking, steering, suspension and performance on a beautiful red MGA. I am looking into either a Mazda miata, bmw z3, honda s2000, or something along those lines.
This is my first project like this where would you guys begin ? do you know of any other body swaps like this? Or possibly some great resources on how to go about this crazy plan.
Thank you in advance,
Alex

Tough sell, as modern cars are unibody construction so you cannot remove the body shell. But plenty of people have installed more modern drive train and suspension parts in the MGA. How about installing Honda S2000 mechanical parts under the MGA?

Yeah - you won't find a modern car you can mount an MGA body on. Concentrate on updating driveline and suspension. Look to the engine swaps section for suggestions.

Read his question more carefully. Your response is irrelevant.
He didn't ask about non-stock after market bodies, he wants to use the stock MGA body on a different chassis.

Bill........perhaps you should answer questions or address inquiries the way you choose and leave others alone. What is irrelevant is your bull **** attitude. I know what he was making and I was offending an alternative. I hope this is ok with you?

The OP wants an MGA body but not an MGA frame. Your so called alternative offers him neither. How is that relevant again......

he also sells many frame options ..thats how. My point to you is ....how is it your place to judge anyone else post relevant or not. It is people with superior attitudes and the need to be self important that always become the "post police" if you did not like my post move on. perhaps thats is hard for you ...but try. Im done responding to your ridiculous posts.
moving on.

You haven't been around that long on this site, but they way it works here is that you get to post pretty much whatever you like and by doing so expose yourself to comment by anyone that wishes to respond.
I failed to see the relevance of your response and said so. No need to get abusive.

A little bit of research . . .
The specs for the MGA are as follows:
Wheelbase—94"
Track width—48" mean average
Body length—156"
Body width—58"
Check on-line for a car that matches the wheelbase. You can make body metal adjustments to match the track width in most cases.
Use this search engine:
http://www.roadkillcustoms.com/hot-rods-rat-rods/Wheelbase-Cross-Reference-Database.asp?Wheelbase=104#axzz4MLiPjfGb
I just checked for a list of the cars that offer an approximate 95" wheelbase:
http://www.roadkillcustoms.com/hot-rods-rat-rods/Wheelbase-Cross-Reference-Database.asp?Wheelbase=95&Filter=All#axzz4MLiPjfGb
These cars are pretty much what you have to work with unless you want to shorten the uni-body structure.
If you're willing to shorten the pan, the choices expand considerably, but stick with the smaller cars or sports cars as the body width can only be pushed so far before things start looking awkward. If you want to go all in, shorten up a Porsche 914 and install a V6 or V8 engine in it. Mid-engine terror masquerading as a vintage MGA.
I would suggest a cage or inner bars to support the uni-body skeleton since you're going to cut away outer body metal and partial inner sheet metal.
Look this stuff up on-line, folks are building some really fun projects 'cause nobody told them not to . . .
Edit:
Here are a couple of pics of a uni-body Porsche 914 stripped down to the skeleton waiting for new fiberglass body panels to be installed. Sort of what you're up to, but using fiberglass rather than a metal MGA body.

Perhaps not......but redness is the same everywhere and unwanted everywhere . I have been around long enough to never have experienced someone as rude as you on this site....further if this site is to survive or even grow it will be in spite of rude people like you not because of them. since you are assuredly the type who needs the last word ...have it I will give no response having said all that is needed. I apologized to Varnoid for the trouble

That's a creative one Thomas!
You are right about modern cars being wider.
Guess he could order up a new Lotus Elan +2 chassis (around 1500 pounds cost) and fit the MGA body to it.
Miata is a few inches shorter wheelbase and a few inches wider body, but something might be done there - it would make a very good foundation for an updated chassis and possibly drivetrain.

I betcha that was exactly what he was thinking about when he posted. I really kinda LOVE the Miata, even the early ones, just do.
You're right about the Miata base as a very good foundation for what I THINK he's planning.

A gentleman that lives here in Salina decided his 1961 Corvette needed to be completely re-done under the body but that it should look stock. It turned out fantastic but the chassis had to be completely fabricated (now tubular) and everything updated to post-millennium specs. It sounds to me like you will need to do something like this but be warned! It wasn't cheap. FWIW, I would keep the chassis but upgrade everything else. Another place you might want to check out would be BritishV8.org

The Pontiac Solstice and Saturn SKY share a hydroformed steel frame that that can be driven without the bodies. Wheelbase and length are very similar to the MGA. Width, like all modern cars it is much wider.
Conceptually an interesting project requiring some serious body modifications to deal with the width.
Wheelbase: 95.1
Length: 157.2
Width: 71.3
