Should my engine have them? If so where? It did have one when it came out but it was on the thermostat housing. I hope no one lifted the engine that way.

It should look like this and is located on head studs at the rear of the motor. The front is slightly different.

1979 MG Midget 1500 "Bloody Midget"
It's difficult to pick out because it's black like the head, but it spans the left most silver bolt in the picture. This is the rear one. The front one does indeed mount between the water outlet housing and the generator. I usually don't have the generator mounted when I install the engine so I use the lower generator mount bolt as a lift point.

The battery charging device is an alternator in most cases not a generator. The front is difficult to make out but I think I have "ball parked" where it belongs. It also is slightly different and I believe of thinner gauge material.

On a 1500 the alternator is on the other side of the engine.
