You'll never get a consensus on that question.
Cecil Kimber has been quoted as saying that "MG" simply stood for "MG" and nothing more. Of course, that was after his falling out with William Morris, and there's no question that the MG marque originated at Morris Garages, so......
Me? I'll go with Kimber's statement. After all, the father of the marque wouldn't lie....would he?

A common question that comes up every few months here. Originally, the company Morris Garages badged its cars as MG's. That's the origin. But the company later dropped the name Morris Garages entirely and simply renamed itself the MG Car Company (with various later name changes to follow) This isn't unusual as many companies over time have done that. CIT is a large nationwide financial corporation which grew out of an earlier company with a dull, boring name like "Credit Investment . . . something." Today it's called CIT which doesn't "stand for" anything. I think KFC has done the same thing. There are many examples. It's very common and helps streamline the brand name. So, the answer is MG does NOT "stand for" anything. MG is the name of the company that made the car.

MG doesn't stand for Morris Garage/s - just like KFC doesn't stand for Kentucky Fried Chicken. Right?

• My opinion becomes truth if I can find one other person, on the Internet with the same opinion. It is 'chiselled in stone" if I find two!
