In reply to # 4780819 by dickmoritz Obvious quickie respray. There's overspray everywhere. Look very closely at body and paint...

Remember PA is the rust belt!

First Buy from a MGE member or individual that actually knows the car.
Second don't buy from a Dealer selling a car for someone else = >Markup!

As always, I'm overwhelmed by the number of responses and I really appreciate the time everyone took to take a look at it! In general responding to a few notes here:

- I'll definitely check for rust in all the usual places - PA definitely is a salty place in the winter.
- I talked to the dealer again and he confirmed that it was resprayed, I'll get a closer look at that. I'll be honest, I feel like most of the MGBs I've looked at have had some kind of paint job in their lifetime and usually it's not top drawer quality...
- I've focused on the rubber bumper cars because it fits my budget and I have familiarity with them having owned a '77.
- And last of all, I'm definitely always checking the classifieds on here or on FB or Craigslist to see if there's a good one to buy directly from the owner! Haven't seen any for a bit and this dealer has a pretty good reputation and seems on the level, and the price is fair if the car is good.

Last step is to go drive the car this weekend. Hopefully it checks out, and I'll follow up on here and let you guys know. Thank you again!
Best,
Bob

Above what has been mentioned I wonder why the website says $6995 when the window sticker says $8995. This is the wrong time of year to reduce price on a sports car due to demand. I have to wonder if they found something wrong that warranted a 22% reduction in asking price. Perhaps it is just a typing error in the website?

I think the photos are old and he’s had the car for a while and is looking to move it… that’s the explanation I got.

Based on the condition of the engine bay I would hesitate buying this car.

If the doglegs and inner fenders were rust sprayed by the same guy who did the engine bay I would be concerned the drain holes are plugged.

It is challenging, but if you do it yourself, not expensive. Just a pain in the neck.

Robert,

It may have been mentioned already but have you looked through the cars offered for sale on here? There may be something with your name on it and you have a good chance of buying from someone who actually knows the car.

Just a thought….

I believe this was a car that was on Facebook marketplace for like 6 months from a private seller in Doylestown. Long story short, the seller went dark for like 2 months. In the interim, I bought another car. He then called asking if I was still interested, said he had problems with his FB account and lost my number. IF this is the same car, the seller claimed Dick Moritz did the OD and SU conversion, and the distributor was curved by Schlemmer- he sent me an excel spreadsheet with the work done and who did it before he went dark.
The car finally was listed as sold with the last asking price of $5300 last winter- he first listed in July of 2022 at $7500.
The car I'm referring to pictured on FB had the same color scheme, front spoiler, steering wheel and some of those top imperfections. I never did see the car in person.
Just passing along this info, because if it IS the same car, then the car allegedly had some pretty competent mechanical maintenance done in the recent past and some idea what the dealer paid for it- or maybe it's on consignment.

Again, I can't guarantee it's the same, but seems too coincidental for it to not be the same car.

FWIW, I still have the spreadsheet he sent me.

Muz,
If you’ve got that excel, I would definitely be interested! Yes - sounds likely that it’s the same car. Doylestown being right down the road and all… I went to go see it yesterday but got 3/4 of the way there and the dealer called and said he couldn’t get it started… since I had to take my kid to tennis I had to turn around. Later he called me back and said he got it going but I was already home.

Dealer claimed it was a trade in on another classic he sold to the owner, also offered to put me in touch with that guy. Anyway, if you have the excel that sounds like it has some great info!

In reply to # 4781449 by ski.dive Also look on EBAY, there are many MGB's for sale there.

Just saw that car on e-bay lots of under coating that looks to be recently sprayed, steering column cowl is crooked and looks to need front suspension bushings but comes with a new ez-on top.As stated check this one out thoroughly for rust, also should check vin numbers.OD is a plus, make him an offer,he will pay 12% on sale plus fees if it sells there.

12% What am I missing? From what I read:

Fees on eBay vehicle sales are different from other items. There is a 2.9% fee on a deposit. The seller is also charged one of several fees for listing the item. I don;t believe there is anything beyond that. I could easily be wrong. One interesting thing about Ebay vehicle sales is that, unlike many other items listed on eBay, Vehicle sales (and Real Estate sales) are non-binding on either party, seller or buyer. They are covered by a VERY limited eBay warranty.

I could easily be wrong, but that is my understanding. If I am, please show me where.

Timothy, I agree that eBay takes ~12% on most everything sold. When it comes to vehicles, their fee uses a different method. From their website:

Quote: When you list a vehicle, you're offered a package of features for an all-inclusive fee. All sellers have three listing package options to choose from (Basic, Plus, and Premium) and you can select either auction or fixed price format for your listing. There are no additional listing upgrade options other than those included in the selected listing package, and we don't charge a final value fee when your vehicle sells.

The 3 packages are:
Basic package: $19
Plus package: $49
Premium package: $79

So the seller who lists a $7,000 vehicle with a $500 deposit, could be out of pocket as low as, $19 for the Basic package listing fee and $14.50 for the deposit fee. There is no final valuation fee for vehicles as listed above. I am not including any income taxes that may, or may not be necessary. That works out to less than 0.5%.

At least that is my understanding of Vehicle fees. I have sold items on eBay over the years. Never a vehicle, although i did list my MGA on it years ago when eBay used a different method for calculating fees.

I don't want anyone to expect that the seller has 12% of that 7000 ($840) as an automatic discount if sold off eBay. There is an "or best offer" on the eBay site. Go ahead and try. Nothing to loose as a buyer as it is non-binding.
