Went to replace the quarter-light rubber today and the spring loaded stud which holds the quarter-light into the frame had rusted solid.

Of course it broke when I tried to release it!

To replace it I have to remove the glass from the small inner frame, while I'm doing this I "might as well" replace the rubber that the glass sits in (this link shows a Moss UK page and the rubber is item *41 http://www.moss-europe.co.uk/MossUK/ProductList.aspx?SubSubCategoryID=MGB_DS021E3-A.

Whats the best way of getting the rubber and glass into the frame? and how do I get it to stay in the frame?

Any advice?

Nearly finished refitting the GT after it's paint, only one real problem so far, a cast in stud on the sunroof frame has sheered off. But I'm hoping drilling and fitting a insert will get me round this. I think all the parts for this sunroof are now obsolete, so I'll be in a real jam if the above doesnt work. The bolt that's gone is a corner one and without it I wont be able to seal the sunroof frame against the weather, it'll also look terrible, with a bump under the fabric!

Wish me luck at the engineering shop on Tuesday.

Andy

I can't help you with the light problem, but I'll wish you luck.

These cars are always great for problem solving.

Andy. I changed mine over the winter and it seems to me that the seal just 'snaps' into place. You will see it is quite obvious as you go about replaceing the old rubber. The hardest part was working the 1/4 light assy out of the door. After that , the rest is a piece of cake. Also try a search on here regarding replacing the 1/4 window seals. Seems to me Naomi did a write-up on that very thing as well.

Seems to me that Kim D did a big restoration of the vent windows on her B a few months ago, and did an excellent write-up here on the forum. Try a search, and you'll find a very thorough explanation and how-to.

The rubber comes as a strip about 1 to 1.5" wide. What I did was to make a frame from a piece of plywood that matched the outer edge of the quaterlite frame ( I laid it on the plywood, traced it and then cut it out) and then used this to push with my Black and Decker workmate bench the glass with the rubber evenly covering the proper edge into the frame. I then used an xacto knife to trim away the excess. Hope this helps.

If You get yourself the Red - MGB Restoration book, there is an excellent section on how to do this. The key to removing the whole frame assembly is to get the bottom bracket completely off the assembly and then it comes out pretty easily. It does take some wiggling.

The book is written by Lindsay Porter, a very knowledgable MGB/Brit Car writer.

Very Good Stuff!!!!

Thanks for all the advice guys, unfortunately the seal is NLA in the UK, so it's off down the pub to think of a new plan!
