Does anyone know of a plating company in the Rockford, Illinois/ Chicago area that can rechrome 1971 GT bumpers?

I have no idea of platers in your area, but hang on to your wallet when you go into shock when you hear the price.

I got new stainless ones and they have been great. And cheaper than having the old ones re-chromed.

You can find older posts about chroming bumpers; pros and cons. As Lee said, it will be expensive. But reproduction bumpers are noted for not having the ends formed the same as OEM, and there have been questions about the quality (thickness) of the plating. If cost is less of a concern, re-chroming by a quality shop will give you a great result.

Gary, how do the stainless versions you mention compare on forming details? My recollection is the reproductions available when I was doing our '67 were not all that faithful in the shape of the bumper ends. But S/S would be nice for the long term!

I've seen recent posts saying the newer bumpers do have correct shape on the ends.

The rear bumper end is pretty close. But the front ends are not quite as curved, the curve is a bit sharper from top to bottom. At first I didn’t really like it, I really liked the more curved, rolled look. But after a while I got used to it and I don’t even notice it with them mounted on the car any more. For the price, it was about $700 shipped to Hawaii a few years ago, and being stainless for our 126” of rain here, it was worth it.

I did have a problem with the hole spacing on the front, that took a lot of screwing around with to get it to fit. Otherwise all good.

I assume you're keeping a watchful eye on them Gary. While stainless is good it is not impervious to the salt air - well not on my Australian coast.

Whilst I don't have any bumpers fitted I do have Realm Dunlop rims with a stainless hub. I noted elsewhere that a couple had rust spots. I've since removed all 4 and had them powdercoated.
