Hi,
I'm normally a Triumph guy, i own a Spitfire .
But my friend has bought a MG B Gt originally from the USA, but he bought it last week in the Netherlands..
Now here in belgium the chassis number must be stamped into the floor , it may not be on a riveted plate :/
So where is normally the place to put it ? Hopefully somebody will know this .
Thanks already

The VIN or chassis number of a US spec MGB is on a plate behind the radiator, or on the inner fender, I believe on the RH side (when viewed from inside the car). Starting in late 60's or early 70's, they did also start to stamp this number into I think the floor of the trunk (Boot) or on the floor pan. I will check my references to confirm.
The VIN will start as GHN3 for roadster or GHD3 for GT Coupe. Later they became GHN4/GHD4 and finally GHN5/GHD5.
What year is the car, and does it have a VIN tag in the expected location?

Hi Peter ,
It's a 1973 (i think it was ) MG B Gt , there is a plate at the drivers sill that says the chassis no , but didn't check anywhere else ( haven't got much time today).

My dad imported his BGT to the Netherlands back in the 80s, but being a UK spec car it didn't have a stamped chassis number so they made him pay to get it stamped into the body.
We asked it at the place where they test cars & co and the big boss there told us to stamp it in ourselfs .. because the manufacture (MG-Rover) doesn't exist anymore and normally you can ask them for papers (my spitfire has them).
But now you need to go to other places and that could take months or even a yeah !
The car was now bought from the Netherlands .. and they also said here in Belgium that they could passed it always in the Netherlands..
My garage said he stamped many chassis no into american cars in the past .. so will look tomorrow everywhere and otherwise we are going to stamp one in , so it can go for a test on friday ..

If it is a USA car, the number is stamped in the right hand chassis leg above the rear mount on the front cross member opposite the starter motor. Only place it was stamped in 73.

The number may also be stamped on the floor pan in front of the right hand seat. Not sure if this applies to US cars. The main id plate is on the door frame of the left hand door and also there should be one on the top of the scuttle visible through the windshield. These should all match the plate on the radiator valance.

Here is the thread to the best location of VIN numbers that I have found. My '67 does not have the VIN stamped into the RH floor, but it does have the VIN stamped on the frame rail in front of the starter.
Genuine VIN from engine ID?

The Tech Library article, Decoding the MGB VIN was updated by Syke. According to the article, on a 1970 to 1980 MGB, look on the driver's side door frame. There should be a plate secured to the dashboard with it also.

Can anyone confirm that the tab above the rubber mount for the front cross member on the right side is where all mk1 cars are stamped. I checked my car and it does not look to be marked here.
On my '67, its stamped into the frame rail behind the brake line forward of the starter. Hard to read when under the car. I had to use a mirror to find it.

It seems to be very hit and miss. Many early cars I've had did not have it anywhere.
Stamping in the right hand floor was done in later rubber bumper production and not any earlier cars.

Believed to be Nov-Dec of 1962 and for NA cars only. The drawing I have of the proposed stamping is not dated.
