How did we get to this? A genuine question about asbestos in MGB (with a few comments that are better on Off Topic) has denigrated to the absurd. sad smiley angry smiley confused smiley

In the UK the disposal of Asbestos Cement roofing sheets is relatively simple, as a householder you can remove and then take up to thirty sheets to most recycling centres in the area where I live but it does cost £13.90 per sheet. Asbestos roofing sheets are extremely common and the normal advice is to leave it where it is unless you have good reason to remove it. Even barn conversions to houses leave the asbestos roof on, sometimes its part of the planning consent that it has to stay. However the guidelines for removing it are very simple and are published by the HSE amongst others, despite this if you Google "asbestos roofing sheets removal" up will come a whole list of ads frightening householders as to the danger of removing it.
The Asbestos used for insulation is a whole different matter and you do have to use a specialised and expensive contractor.

In reply to # 4632800 by Aussie77RBB Bev,
To answer your question here in Oz, asbestos waste is disposed of in special areas of landfill, so it won’t ever be dug up again. For non commercial quantities it generally has to be wrapped in plastic of a certain specification, sealed and then gets special handling at the landfill site, not in with the general rubbish.

The threat of a lingering death from asbestosis should make anyone careful with the product- it takes 20 to 40 years to manifest in human lungs resulting in hardening of the lung walls to the point where the subject can no longer breath. Not a nice way to go.

The James Hardie experience that Barrie mentions is a good read.

I can assure everyone that the threat of asbestosis is very real, and not a scam, just ask the people that have contracted the disease, or family members of those who have passed on from it.

In a previous life I was a qualified Asbestos Removalist and taught the subject at a TAFE college. If disturbed it is scary stuff!

My carby shield had nothing on it, so I fitted some modern heat pad.

I am hoping to ship my 1939 MG TA to Australia as soon as I can get this asbestos matter resolved. This will cover brake linings, exhaust manifold gaskets (the TA has a cork clutch so no problem there). My research shows that from late November 1999, it has been illegal to buy, sell, import or export any materials containing asbestos in the UK.Hence if I can show proof that I have purchased the above items (brake linings, gaskets etc) from the UK recently after that Nov 1999, does anyone have experience to indicate this will be acceptable to the AQIS ?

I think you need to ask AQIS. AFAIK you still need a certificate of "no asbestos" from an approved person before sending your car to AU. IDK if there are any approved persons in Singapore so again ask AQIS. It's possible given your reasons for exporting the car - whatever they are - AQIS may have a solution. Warning : don't lie about the reasons for exporting it as they have ways of finding out.

I have not imported a car since 2002 but I feel your best bet is to import a car back to Australia with the new Asbestos rules is to contact an Australian company that advertises Asbestos testing. Google found a fair few with these three as examples

https://www.dazmac.com.au/asbestos-testing-cleaning
https://cargoonline.com.au/to-australia/asbestos-imported-cars/
https://www.personalimport.com.au/australian-border-force-detects-asbestos-classic-cars-owners-risk-thousands-dollars-fines/

I think all three are Australian companies with contacts overseas and from reading their websites I think will help with Asbestos testing while overseas, applying for the Vehicle Import Approval (VIA), arranging the shipping and then clearing the car once here. It could be worthwhile contacting one or more of them to see if they will ship from Singapore and provide the services you require. I don't know any of them or have any alliance, I just found them via Google.

Thank you. I am already in touch with Cargoonline, who are helpful but are having a challenge with Singapore contact for testing. I will contact the other two meanwhile.
