I have a complete 1500 head that's all rusted. Can it be salvaged? Similarly, a pitted 1600 camshaft.

Camshaft: Junk if the journals are pitted

Look sharply after your own thoughts. They come unlooked for, like the morning dove upon your window sill, and, if you turn to your usual task, disappear; and you shall never find that perception again; never, I say-but perhaps years, ages, and I know not what events and worlds my lie between you and its return.

It's all a question of degree and how deep the rust pitting goes.

A crankshaft can be reground. A head can be resurfaced. All the valves, springs and valve guides can be replaced. But if they've been sitting outside for 20 years, probably not.

Cams are cheap relatively speaking... not worth it to reclaim.

Head... take it to the machine shop... have them blast and look for cracks.

Oh, I agree. Forget the camshaft. When I made my earlier comment, I thought it was a crank.

Thanks for the input. I'll take a picture and post it. I'm not interested in the head (mine was long ago switched to a B head) and just wanted to know if it might be of value to anyone else.

I misspoke - from the numbers, it's the original head from my '59 MGA (I was thrown by the "15" on the head). Attached are pictures; it wasn't as rusty as I imagined. It still has fragments of gaskets stuck to it.

Howard

Check where I circled in red for cracks. Common place for water leaks.
Beyond that clean up and get a machine shop to pressure test, valve seats, guides resurface if needed new valves & valve job.

Roadside art.

A few Saab photos from Eric's collection to take Howard back to the "glory days".

While driving the Volvo in western Vermont, not too far over the Champlain Bridge.

Howard,

Two interesting things I see in your photos. Alloy spring retainers and a thermostat blanking sleeve. Either the head was modified for racing or cooling was an issue. Are the valve springs triple Iskenderian? They are the far right spring in the photos below and originally used alloy retainers. If so, the spring recesses have been enlarged to fit them.

Silas
