Where is the fuel filter on my 79 Midget? I have the engine out for another issue but can't find the filter, not even in the manual.

I will get shot down in flames if wrong, but I believe your fuel filter is currently in a parts catalog. Fit it before the pump and DEFINITELY not in the engine bay
OT but a neighbor’s A had a huge filter right by the engine, fuel lines looping all around and in need of rerouting, and a boiling problem. Fun being ignored, isn’t it.

I don't believe the factory fitted a fuel filter. If you find one it was added by a previous owner. On my cars I install a filter just before the carb(s).

I have a metal in line filter before the carbs. WIX or Purolator. To left of carbs.
I have a points style SU pump and some say to install in front of pump too. I don’t have one there.
There is a filter screen on the pickup I think, if it’s still there. Cleaned my tank good about 5 years ago and I think it was still there.

As others have correctly stated, there was no fuel filter in the 1500. There is a small, insignificant screen in the fuel tank, but it's not a filter.
Install a plastic or metal one in front of carb as others suggested. I like plastic because you can sharpie a date and mileage directly on it. Don't install glass, they tend to burst into flames.
Good luck!

On my '74, I have a pre-filter between the fuel tank and electric fuel pump, and then one again in the engine compartment prior to the carbs. May be over-kill, but no harm either.

If you use an SU pump (or similar), and if the filter before it were to clog, that will quickly burn up the pump. This is why the advice is to only install one after the pump (the pump can digest large particles so there's no need to put one before).
If your fuel tank is badly corroded inside a filter is just a bandaid until it rusts through and gets replaced then there's hardly a need for a filter at all.

Ha! I have the same, but I also have 2 pumps in-line run off of a 3-way switch, each with its own pre-filter.
The picture I posted, that pump was replaced since I took it.
Oh yah, definitely overkill here, but nice to have a backup at the flip of a switch.

I don't disagree with you Norm, but the 2 pumps I bought don't have the direct to hose connection, they require the screw-in filter.

Your pumps are not SU's.

Good call. I would think the principle would be the same, it might not be "quick" tho

They require a screw-in filter? Why couldn't you just use a screw-in nipple for the fuel hose?

For everything you could ever want to know about SU fuel pumps (including an article with photos showing why they won't survive a plugged filter upstream) here is a link to Dave DuBois web site, and excellent resource:
http://www.dbraun99.com/Dave%20DuBois/
MG Guru Tech Index has an amazing wealth of knowledge in it, from which I have learned immensely, he says the same in his fuel pump filters article:
http://www.mgaguru.com/mgtech/
It is true that many aftermarket pumps require a filter upstream, that is because they work differently than SU does.
