I have an MGBGT 1965 where I am having difficulty in determining what gear box I have which was converted to a five speed by a previous owner. The major problem is that the starter motor gave up the ghost and now needs replacing. The starter which came out is a cheap Chinese make with no markings. A standard Lucas inertia starter, a M35 type will not fit as the mounting holes in the gear box are 5" apart whilst a Lucas is only 4.5 ' wide.
What have I got ? Could anyone help me please ?

Pics?

Presumably this was an AU conversion?

Without further info we'd be guessing.

PS maybe Doug can help you re spacing - read #3 here

Sorry Barrie no pics as the starter motor is at the auto electricians where he is going to change the flange (pinion end) of the Chinese model and assembled it to the Lucas M35 which would then give the mounting flange distances between the two holding bolts as 5". Hopefully that will work otherwise I will have to scratch around to find an inertia style Lucas motor which will fit. I hopefully I will know come this coming Thursday. I feel but yet to be determined a Lucas LRS101 may fit . I think the 5 speed box is off a Datsun 210, 5 speed.

I meant pics of the box but you've added you think it's out of a Datsun 210 so that helps for those familiar with that box.

The Nissan 280z or 280zx box is generally used for the MGB and the B210 is used for the Midget/Sprite.
It could also be a Toyota w58 trans.

Photos of the gearbox would help!

My B-GT now has the T-9 gearbox (5-speed), can use the standard Lucas stater (been replaced with a WOSP high-torque starter).

Safety Fast,

John

Thank you for your reply John however it looks as though mine is a Datsun 210.

That is interesting. I have a B210 trans for a stalled Bugeye project. I will have to check the feasibility of installing it in my MGB.

I think I would look again if I were you, as mention that is gearbox normally used in Spridget and a lot shorter from bellhousing to tailshaft than more common 5 speed gearboxes used in a MGB. If you have 210 gearbox in a MGB, you would the only one I have ever heard having such a gearbox in the MGB. Anything is possible, but it is very unlikely that is the gearbox you have in a MGB.

I think it's less likely to be the 56A box from the B210 (Datsun 120Y in Australia.) I don't even think they had overdrive so a pretty pointless conversion.

What is the shift pattern? If it's a standard H pattern then it'll most likely be the F5W71B box from the 200B, Bluebird (910) and 280ZX.

If it's the 'dogleg' box, ie. reverse in the top left position, it'll be to 60A box from a Stanza. These boxes are smaller and slightly shorter, but some had the longer extension housing.

Problem solved. My gearbox is from a Nissan 280ZX with a Rivergate conversion. The starter motor front plate (actually towards the rear of the engine) holding down flange is 5" not Lucas 41/2" as is normal. I used the front plate of the Chinese starter I had and changed the plate on the Lucas. All good now and works well.
Many thanks for all of your suggestions.
