Recently I purchased a new Tom’s knob from England they are avaiable. I decided today to replace it I gain access in passenger side footwell remove the vinyl panel and there was a clamp I loosen it and tried to move it no way. Took a pair of wire cutters and slowly cut it off. Jack up the car and used Jack stands. The hose didn’t move and was very hard. So inside I got a sharp knife and cut it and then pulled it out from the bottom. The top part of the hose was really stuck on so I took a small knife made slits in it till it came off. It wasn’t rusted but dirty so I took a stiff wire and started to clean it very messy but I did get it cleaned . Ran a small round wire brush up there attach to the stiff wire worked well. When I put in the new Tom knob in greased the nipple and hose and slipped it on. I didn’t use a clamp but I used a large zip tie and pulled it tight. It’s all done and not a fun job but very doable. Took about 3 hrs on my 66 mgb car was restored in1999 very clean. I plan on putting a mesh screen in the air intake and never wash the car without covering the air intake first. I don’t drive the car when there’s a threat of rain.

It's not washing the car that's the problem, it's debris from trees and other muck that falls on cars. I simply cut the slotted end off on mine so it can't block. I've had no sign of any fumes entering the car, and believe me my good lady would certainly let me know if she smelt even a whiff.

I agree but anybody who owns these would say water is there number 1 enemy simple because these car are unibody with zero rustproofing just primer and paint. Rust is the problem there is no way to get to certain areas unless you pull off fenders and such. I have plenty of experience.

Hi Chris I’m not to tech savvy but I posted a picture of what I took out. The area is covered by two carpeted kick panels I unscrew them and remove the black spring loaded vent flap. The access is right there remove the clamp and pull out

Goodness. It even looks like a knob.

I got my car from a fellow that parked under a magnolia tree for 20 years. There was at least an inch of magnolia detritus that had fallen into the cowl which held the moisture there until it rusted out the bottom. It's not water that passes through that is the problem - it's water that stays.
