I have a 79 rubber bumper MGB that I plan to install a moss lowering kit. I want to install new wheels 6 x 14 with 20mm offset. Any suggestions for the best size tires for this setup?

I would go with 15” wheels and then search for tires that keep the diameter approximately the same.

For 14" wheels, 175 70R 14 is, by far, the most popular choice. Some like to go up to 185, and some like 80R.

Without the lowering kit, 180/70R14 is a close to original fit. To be safe, with the lowering kit, maybe the 175s would be better? The circumference difference between the two is almost 1 1/2 inches, but the diaper is only 1/2 difference.

If the car is lowered I think you'll find that 185 width is about the widest you can depend on without rubbing. I've got 6 inch wheels and I ended up using a Panhard Arm to ensure clearance. Rear axles on MGBs were often offset by 1/4" or more due to warpage on the rear springs (I suspect). Maybe if your axle is perfectly centered and your offset is ideal you could get away with 195 width.

185/65x14 is about 3% smaller than the original 155/82x14 tires on earlier cars. I believe that the RB cars used 185/70x14 (edit: upon reflection I think they used 175 width, not sure about the profile). 185/70x14 is about 2% larger than the 155/82x14 tires. Particular brands and models of tires also vary somewhat. Speedometers of that era were rarely more accurate than 3% anyway.

If I had it to do over again I'd go with 15" wheels - more selection of tires.
