Hi all,

'79 MGB with a Moss Supercharger.

I had a timing cover bolt shear off. Can anyone tell me the size and thread of the bolt. I may need to ship one here to Cambodia.

Probably 1/4"x28 pitch. Also called 1/4" SAE fine. Length would be about 1/2". But a bit longer won't hurt anything.

If you follow the ordering page, you will see that Moss Europe calls out three different parts (depending on exact location for item 37)

Moss Europe PN QTY Spec
SH604031 3 1/4" UNF x 3/8"
GHF117 2 1/4" UNF x 3/4"
GHF120 4 5/16" UNF x 3/4"

There's nothing special about these screws, you could get them from any US-UK supplier that has UNF bolts and nuts. These only need to be grade 5 but you could get grade 8 also for more universal application.

or else perhaps when you order your next MG parts you include a small number of the standard sizes to amortize your shipping.
1/4" UNF x 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1"
5/16" UNF x 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1"
And some nuts and some split washers

So, I found the superchargers BOM and it calls out 1/4-28 X 2 1/4 in. (flat head allen screw)

This is what sheared. 3 of them hold a bracket to the timing cover with some spacers used in between the bracket plate and the timing cover. The bracket supports 2 additional idler pulleys as well as providing a connection point for the SC's nose bracket.

Oh yes they do! I wouldn't link if they didn't. You didn't say that your timing cover bolts were replaced for supercharger purposes. Sorry I wasted my time.

Getting the remains out can be a big problem. I've had success with left hand drills. Use a small size first to make a pilot hole then go up a step. The larger drill bites into the bolt and unscrews it.

Drew,

I'm with Barrie, you've got to help us to help you--we are all volunteers here. Barrie and I honestly thought you needed to replace the standard screws for the timing cover, not being told they were part of your supercharger setup. Your car had a supercharger but that wasn't obviously related to your problem.

If you'd said, "I've got these sheared bolts which are about 50 mm long + whatever is broken off, but I can't tell the bolt diameter or thread" then we would have been able to help by saying they are probably 1/4" UNF but might be 5/16" UNF then you would have been able to measure the bolt shank diameter and decide for yourself they must be 1/4" UNF.

Or "I've got broken bolts which are 1/4" diameter but I don't know if they are fine or coarse thread", then we could have easily told you fine thread.

You've got to help us to help you

Andy

Those mounting points for the idler seem to be a weak point with the early SC units. Might warrant a very strong bolt.

"Com'n chaps, read the initial post!"

But I did read the initial post. Not having a supercharged B I was not aware that it utilised existing timing cover bolt holes with supercharger specific screws. Had I known that then I would have added I knew nothing about the length but my link did give diameter and pitch. As Andy wrote "help us to help you" which is a reasonable call.

Yeah, I needed the thread size. That didn't change with the SC install.

Simple method to determine bolt size. Simply take an open end wrench and slip over bolt shank, preferably a threaded section (may NOT fit over non-threaded bolt shank, but will be close). 5/16"open end fits over 5/16" threads, 1/4"wrench fits over 1/4" threads. Thread pitch is UNF fine threads. Length is remaining bolt length plus 1/4" to 3/8" to get close, or simply add length of extracted piece once it's out.
