IIRC it's 7/16 UNF but it's not a bolt it's a special tie down. Numerous invert the spare tyre to carry stuff so a bolt and plate can be substituted. Click here and read bottom right.

Mk1: CKD 11/66 first registered 8/5/67; owned since 3/77. 18GB +40 balanced. Peter Burgess BVFR head. Piper 285. 123. FidanzaFW. 4synch c/r box. Lots more as I did a nut and bolt rebuild; finished 2015. Tartan Red.

GT: December '78. VW Golf guards, flush fit front and rear valances. Torana XU1 vents, frenched indicators & Mk1 rear lights. 'Worked' Rover V8 with Monsoon ECU for EFI. GM4L60E, Lokar tiptronic & Quick4 controller. Vintage Air A/C. FC IFS. CCE 4 link rear. Salisbury with Quaife. Jaguar Storm.

I found that with modern tires, the OEM tie down is too short. Many, myself included, have extended it with a coupling, a short stud and a bit of loctite. I got the parts from McMaster-Carr, but not sure what's available in your part of the world.

Here's how I lengthened my spare wheel hold-down.

In reply to # 4787855 by smokey w Here's how I lengthened my spare wheel hold-down.

I did the same.

In the past I deflated the 185-14 tire a bit, that allowed the sidewall to collapse enough so that the clamp could reach the threaded part on the trunk floor. I always carry a small air compressor in an ammo box in the trunk, it was quick and easy to unscrew the clamp and re-inflate the tire when needed.

Lengthening the hold down just makes it quicker to access the fully inflated spare when required - no compressor necessary.

In reply to # 4787820 by MGB567 Numerous invert the spare tyre to carry stuff so a bolt and plate can be substituted.

That's not practical with a wire wheel spare, the hub protrudes too far and prevents the tire from sitting securely on the floor of the trunk. If someone has come up with a way to invert a spoke wheel spare, I'd like to see it.

Aah so not 7/16. smiling bouncing smiley

I inverted a spare centre-lock Minatour by placing a piece of foam under it about the housing in the boot floor. IDK if that has the same protrusion as a w/w.
