What is everyone's preferred SCCR oil? Redline MTL? I see Valvoline has a VR1 30wt. or the VR!20-50. Will any generic non synthetic 30 weight or 20-50 do? Is the extra zinc in the VR1 good or even needed for a transmission. MTL is yellow metal safe and Redlines website says it works in our transmission.
All opinions welcome.

I used VR1 in both MGB and Midget with the sychromesh stock type SC/CR gear sets. I tried MTL it made no difference, so I went back to VR1.

I have CR gears in my MGA (but not SC). I've used both VR-1 20w-50 & Redline MT-90. I don't notice any difference in shifting feel.

Who are these "lots of transmission builders"?

Lots of transmission builders hate Redline MTL. The Valvoline or Mobil One stuff is good.
Hightower, GForce, Andrews… all big hp NASCAR and GT racing transmission builders, that produce a lot of heat and put up with a lot of load.
Spec Miata and Honda racing transmission builders as well. It’s too thin at temp and can eat away at some softer components (Honda builders have this problem). Mobil One is the good stuff.

Those are very, very different transmissions. And our engines don't make 1/4 the horsepower of a Nascar or GT car. Do you really think our transmissions are subjected to the same loads?

Our components are scaled down, so that’s an apples and oranges argument. They make more power, but they also have more oil volume and bigger components.
This is like tires, the harder / faster you go, the more heat and load you put into components. On our Alfa and Triumph engines are putting 100% + more power than stock through them and drivers use them hard.
Some people might get seasons out of them, like tires, to me that just tells me they’re not going hard enough.

Hightower, lives like 2 miles down the road from me, he likes Mobile One gear oil with his additive, that's what I used in SCCA Midget Taylor and worked great. He showed me gear of folks running Redline in his dog boxes compared to folks that ran Mobile One and his additive, and you could see a big difference, as for the gears looking heated, or not. Don't do that on the synchromesh SC/CR though, just go with VR1
