Is there supposed to be a distance washer at that fitting?
I seem to recall something about that.
I would contact MOMA, Speedograph-Richfield, or an instrument rebuilder and ask.

The threads on the gearbox end of my cable are mangled so mine will only screw on half way. It still does the job and my speed doesn't oscillate. It won't cause it to slip and read wrong.
EDIT:
Mine has a retrofitted overdrive and 4-syncro gearbox with the cable mounted without an angle drive. The parts overview for the early MGB does not show a washer.

A distance washer is needed to prevent failure of the cable. Any washer that fits around the rotating cable and within the housing will work. Thickness should be around 3/32” if I remember correctly. The washer that came with my adapter was a copper sealing washer such as used on our hydraulic connections. If one doesn’t solve the problem use two. Others may have more specific information.

I believe the copper washer is needed if you have an angle drive in between the cable and the gearbox. If you look up the angle drive in Moss Motors you'll find some instructions on using the washer. Some have eliminated the angle drive and just used the longer overdrive cable. If you're not able to screw it all the way on then I suspect the plastic threads are cross threaded. You might try removing the 2 bolts that attach the plastic to the gearbox to inspect and repair if possible. When reassembling don't over tighten.
Edit. If you don't have the angle drive and aren't using the longer speedo cable then that is probably the problem.

I replaced my speedo cable the other day and it also wouldn't clamp the collar on the gearbox end so it was loose. Imade a little 3,5 mm thick washer (13 mm inner diameter and 18 mm outer diameter) with a gap so that I could slip it over the cable housing and inside the nut. Now the end is secure against the flange. You can probably make something similar by cutting some copper washers. I needed at least 3 mm (about 1/8" thickness to get ti to hold securely. Maybe an O-ring can be used as it can be stretched over the flange first.
