For you in the good old USA, this might sound strange. I am retired (now 77) but looking back over my working life I calculated that the government here in the UK took half of my gross salary in various taxes every year. I usually worked as a salaried employee but later became an independent consultant/contractor. I still had to give half of my income to the government.
I didn't mind because here the state gave me health care (perhaps not the best but pretty good most of the time), education including a subsidised college degree, unemployment aid (which I never needed to use), and a small pension once retired (at 65). Trouble is, that now a lot of the health care has disappeared (I can count about 6 operations or procedures I need currently and am forced to wait), no dental help and I have to have a terminal illness to see a GP. I feel ripped off!
When I look at the wider picture, the state provided services have become very poor (e.g. roads now badly maintained and pot-holed), The police are badly under-manned and the military likewise (our airforce has about 50 planes still flying and about 40 people qualified to do so). Our public buildings are decaying fast - partly from the use of a foamed concrete substituting for the real thing about 40 years ago. 4 of the 5 main hospitals near me (within 40 miles) are falling down because of this. Plus many schools and other buildings.
I must not use the P word but I have the feeling they are all idiots or rogues. Have I been slow to catch on?

...in a word...YES I am almost the same age as you,75 and I and my sister had a buffer to go along with our public education, my family on both sides were non union teachers and my grandfather was a school principal. a tremendous advantage in a young mans life, I am sure I never lived up to the expectations but I still feel blessed for them...as they instilled a sense of ethics and personal responsibility that has rarely let me down, and that big brother was the problem not the answer. Kudos to you for the awakening....

There are very few products or services that cannot be delivered both better and for less money privately than by any government entity. School systems used to be under total local control. They worked fine. Now that the federal, and state governments are involved they suck. Trying to make education “equal for all” has lowered education for all to the level of the worst. Today’s gifted and talented programs are “racist” Most school systems are leftist indoctrination centers. Who cares about reading, writing and arithmetic.

Read the article AND all the comments from happy students.
Even with the “predatory” stuff the degrees still seem to cost less than the state schools.
Sounds like an attack on a Christian organization.
I know of schools sponsored by religion that don’t take any federal money to avoid federal control.

And accountability.

one of the most respected in the nation....with few peers, and the antithesis of public education and refuses and state or federal funding.... as for accountability I give you the Ivy League or one of the most notorious...U.K.’s University of East Anglia or try this on "Duke Lacrosse “Rape Case” ...I could go on but why the public school sycophants will continue to defend the indefensible....

Continued increase of taxes and more govt. employees. Why? Because our Federal Government has it's fingers in far too many areas that are not part of the Fed's responsibilities. This practice does create a LOT of filthy rich politicians. This is steadily becoming the primary goal!

It's called fourteen years under the Tories, Paul. Thatcher sold off our public assets to the highest bidder long ago. Most of them - and the country - are now owned by foreigners. They raised debts against the privatised companies, stripped the assets, and fed the shareholders the "profits". Good! Let the free market decide!
Look at Thames Water - privatised, asset stripped, and now as good as bankrupt - and they want British taxpayers to bail them out! Meanwhile the rivers are literally full of s***. And the Tory cronies keep voting for them to allow the pumping of s*** into the rivers.
I presume you don't have a mortgage. Think yourself lucky. The only good thing about Liz "Lettiuce" Truss' disastrous 49 day tenure of libertarian foolishness is that it was such a failure that it won't happen again any time soon.
Thankfully, the Selfservatives will be out in November. Starmer can turn things around but it will take an age and an absolute fortune. The hedge fund Tories have screwed this country, through the unmitigated disaster of Brexit, the chronic underfunding of our health system and all other parts of govt, and through their general incompetence.
