I am considering the purchase of a 1969 MGC roadster. Seeking cost estimate to strip exterior & interior of trunk to bare metal. Would appreciate estimates.

Alex,

Your best bet is to take to several shops in your area and get estimates. There's just to many variables, mainly if it has any rust and costs can vary by region as well.

I can tell you that I'm doing all the work myself with the exception of the final exterior surface spraying and I have about $3-4K ( I gave up adding it up;-) in materials alone. It's crazy how expensive paint materials have gotten.

You may have better luck down there. A few immutable truths about paint jobs.

Most collision shops won't touch it....

Restoration shops are booked months if not years in advance....

You have to decide what kind of paint job you want. Driver quality, show quality or slap it on and everything in between.

Be prepared for ultimate sticker shock. Buddy of mine say that a general rule of thumb is 4 to 5 times materials cost depending.... just for the paint... not including any body work. 3K worth of material... well you get the idea.

Lastly... do get a recommendation from someone who has had a good experience with a shop....

Alex,

You can save your self a pile of money if you are able to strip the car down to just the body shell yourself. Even more if you can do some or all of the paint stripping as well.

Pic of my car on the way to the bodyshop:

Alex I have a 1969 C for sale that has a 12 year old restoration at a very fair price. Email me at smnyquist@att.net if you are interested.
