So got my first real look under the bonnet today and this oil filter housing looks different to the one on my 56 MGA - To make an order worth shipping from the u.k. I added in a couple of filters which seemed smaller than the MGA - it now looks completely different! The MGA gas a single bolt in the bottom allowing the (longer) cartridge to be accessed, the ZB appears to have a unit that drops out of the bottom ? with no joint below where the large pipe on the side enters - or am I missing something, or has tge filters housing been changed at some point?
Also enclosed a pic of the housing on what I understand is an MGB motor that was thrown in - can this screw on filter housing be used, or is there one available. The box of "bits" also included longer cartridges and a couple of material wrapped around a cage one. NO leaks good pressure but would like to use fresh oil but don't want to drop filter off and find I can't replace straight away...

Mark: I added a filter adapter from Moss to my ZB. I now use a very common oil filter, the Fram 3600 fits many Datsuns, Fords and other cars available from Napa, Walmart, Amazon and more.
And does not make a big mess when changing the oil and filters.

Dear Mark,

No that oil filter is the same one as originally used on the very early MGA engines . It still uses the same internal oil filter element as the later MGA cannisters.
If you want to fit a spin-on adaptor make sure you use the hang down type, not the later standup upright style, as that may interfere with your generator which is longer in length that the alternator that was fitted with the later MGB upright oil filter adaptor.

Thx for that - and makes sense as my MGA is a 1622, is it just me or is the cartridge I have been sent shorter than the one in my 1622? So rather than take out the bolt and remove the cartridge and outer case, does it just drop out? with a plate & seal holding it in? (a recent knee replacement stops me getting under to look!)

Hello Mark,
Not sure if i get the question right. The filter element is shorter than the tecalemit housing. There are several parts inside.
There are also smaller spin on filters sold for the mga. I guess anbot ja and the length of the one shown.
I would recommend to source a service parts list. There you get an idea of what is original and how it is build up. You will see that there should be a heat shield below your carbs and a different oil bath air cleaner.
If it is not available check Barney Gaylord mgaguru pages. Lots of information is useful for magnettes too. I am pretty sure there are informations on the different oil filters and after market adapters used.
Look on magnette.org. There is an parts list as pdf available inside the technical tipps.
Simon

Appreciated - makes sense if there are other parts inside - likely to go spin on, and see if I can find a heat shield - Thx Again

Dear Mark,

Yes, there is a spring and a steel internal pressure plate holding up the internal oil filter, so no need to find a taller oil filter element.
Also, the factory fitted a carb heat shield to the ZA/ZB agnettes, it is very similar to the MGA one but has a square cutout at the bottom.

Appreciated - will start searching - funnily when you look from above it doesn't look like the bottom fitting on the filter housing would be wide enough - clearly it is.
