Since we moved off the Airpark I lost my shop. I had a 3000 square foot hangar for my cars. I am going to build a 28’ by 26’ garage.
I will record the progress here.
We finally broke ground on the new MGA shop Friday afternoon.
The footings are dug and the steel is in.
Inspection Monday morning.

It doesn't matter how big you build it, you'll fill it up. I built a 55 x 25 which looked barren and empty at first, but now there are times I can't walk through the place.

Went from a 22' x 22' garage to a 25' x 40' garage. And I still have to park cars outside...

This is the new house. 4 car garage plus a 21by 50 RVgarage. The old house had a single 24 by 48 4 car garage and a 50 by 60 hangar.
The 4 car garages contain 4 cars in driving condition. The new shop will not be for storage it will be for working on things, the RV garage will be for storage.
I also have a 40’ hi cube shipping container for storage. It can be seen to the right in the picture.
At my stage of life I will not be acquiring more stuff for the kids to dispose of. I will probably reduce my MGA collection from 4 to 2.
I just need an air conditioned shop to work in. I did save the hoist and the compressor from the hangar.

Randy

I am putting in a mini split in mine. Obviously I need heat more often than AC but I didn’t want to run a gas line as mine is 240 feet from the house.

The mini splits have come a really long way in efficiency and size they can go now days.

Mine as she sits today. I was limited by code as to what size… 1200 sq ft is the biggest I was allowed… so I went up as high as I could too tongue sticking out smiley

Scissor trusses are you friend.

Looks great Todd.
I also plan on using a mini split. I’m more concerned about the AC than the heat though. We only turned on heat 1 time for about 4 hours last winter
Used a mini split for the office area of the hangar. Works well, buyer turned it into living space.
But in your climate:
The black tube infrared gas heaters can be really efficient for a shop. I used them in 2 12 bay auto shops I used to own and occupy in Colorado before I retired. Quick heat from cold. Melts snow quickly. You can keep it at 50 or less then it heats quickly. An air pump for heat would be real slow to recover. You would have to maintain an higher heat level overnight to be warm enough to work. It would be much more expensive to maintain heat in cold weather. In the long run I believe it to be less expensive to run the line and use gas.
Code limited mine to 15’ overall height. To get a 12’ ceiling for the hoist we had to go with a the 2.5/12 roof pitch.

I did a 24' x 40' (still too small) Code limited me to 14' average height so did 12:12 pitch outer pitch 8:12 inner pitch and 10' walls ... Yes scissor trusts are your friend, I put attic trust in the rear 14' for a loft.

Here is a shot with the cement truck inside the barn.

Wow… lots of great garages here.

I’m going to look into those heaters Randy. Yes, gas would have been cheaper in the long run but I would have to change my riser (again). I keep everything at the same temp constantly so not worried about quick recovery. Also going to insulate the crap out of the place.

I was limited to 18 foot median height. I think we blew past that but that’s up to the builder to handle.

In my work shops we kept the temp down at night. The infrared has almost instant comfort as it feels like sunshine. It heats people, things/floor not the air. Temp kept in the 60s feels warm. A mini split would really struggle. The colder it gets the more they struggle. They collect heat from the outside to warm the inside.
My business is pictured here, rental shop just shows to the right.
Bob, your shop looks great. 6” spray foam insulation does a great job. I will be building a second level into the back of my RV garage like you show. Great place for storage.

Yep, my exact thoughts (and experience). A garage is NEVER big enough.
I moved from a 25 x 35 garage to a 35 x 60 garage, and I was surprised how in the world was I able to fit all that stuff into 25x35! Practically no room in the 60ft one!
Thank gawd for awning/lean-to add ons, huh.

Well as long as we're sharing... We went old school with our framing. Ridge beams and headers, etc. About 19' at the peak, and around 1,450 sq ft. It wasn't enough. I've already expanded once, and might expand again.
