I have a 3 synchro MGA gearbox (low starter 1500 case) with genuine Jack Knight straight cut close ratio gears, surplus to requirements. Has been in my road register car for 20 years - about 30,000 kms. Still in good condition. Sick of the noise, so changing to the Vitesse MX-5 Miata gearbox. How much do people think it is worth?
Regards
Mike

Yep, I get it. My buddy has a SC/CR geabox in his 1380-powered Bugeye, that gearbox is horrible in the street Bugeye, hard to get going, too high of 1st gear ratio and too noisey beyond enjoyement. If you have not already you may want to list this in the Motorsports section, as SC/CR gearbox is most desired by racers. Besides, the Jack Knight SC/CR ratio gear set was one the best ones ever made, better quality steel and hardening process beyond what is offered today. Another thing I tell street car folks, while a close ratio gearbox sounds cool for the street, it really isn't, unless you just like shifting a good bit more.

I don't know what it's worth but I feel your pain. My old MK2 Deluxe had a CR gearbox with a 4:55 rear end just wasn't fun on the highway so instead of messing with it I sold the car. confused smiley

A few years ago, $2,500 US. Not so sure now. Seems to be no one building new MGA race cars around me. Younger guys don’t even know what an MGA is!

I agree with Hap, and maybe the MG Vintage Racers on Facebook - or your Australian equivalent.

New SC/CR MGA gear set still range, 2200-2500 USD, Brown and Gammons is a little cheaper than Moss UK. A Jack Knight gear sets were always a little more expensive, as they are made from better than today's stuff. So if Michael ask $2500USD or an Australian dollar value of 3876.00, a racer would be getting a good deal.
