This afternoon I was reinstalling my distributor. I inadvertently connected the red and black wires to the wrong terminals on the coil. Turned on. The ignition and there was a “pop”. Have I fried the pertronix?

Yes. Solid state parts do not like to be hooked up backwards.

Since you are ordering a new one, replace with an Ignitor II. Variable dwell, protection against leaving the ignition on, and the option of using lower resistance coil. For the latter, you do have to switch to a voltage triggered tach (or make other mods). But the dwell and power on protection can be used with the standard setup.
