Hi,

My MGB cover seemed to have pulled hard on my lift-the-dot fastener on body part. It is unscrewed now and I'm wondering how to screw it back again. I must admit I did not check, but I'm wondering where from I can access to add a washer and a nut. Any picture or tip?

And btw I will anyway change the cover. And need a half tonneau cover either...

Thanks a lot.

Hello Yann, welcome.

You have posted in the MGA section. While the members here are renowned for their knowledge & willingness to help (plus being the most handsome) you might want to scroll up to the MGB section.

That said, there are some different types of Lift-The-Dot studs. Some have sheet metal or wood screws, some have machine threads that use a nut/washer. And some have a base plate with two screws. If you have the machine thread type then, indeed, a nut/washer should be on the other side of the sheet metal. The nut can be difficult to reach so it might take some contortions to access it. If it is the sheet metal type it is possible that pulling too hard has distorted or torn the metal - whereupon it may never tighten properly.

Hi,

1. How can I move this thread? Should I close it and reopen?
2. Mine is similar to the last one on the pic. I'll need to access underneath car body...

You're fine here for now. I SAW it. All of the "Studs" are accessible. from inside the car, behind the upholstery panels. The extreme R/H and the L/H outer ones are trickier but can be reached through the opening inside the boot, (Trunk), through the SLOT. between the rear cowl, and the rear bulkhead. Use a 'KEP" NUT. 10-32 Thread. Use TAPE, sticky side out on a thin strip of metal,to hold the NUT. and screw the stud iNTO the NUT. If you need a drawing I will put one op. Good luck. I'll try to fix it and let you know. Hopefully no drawing needed.

St Cloud is close to me. Is he a MG fan too?

The pegs for the hood and tonneau cover are all secured by a lock washer and 10-32 nut. The 2 pegs nearest the door B pillar can be access from underneath after the side panel is removed, same for the other door side.

The pegs on the tonneau panel can be accessed from underneath without needing to remove the rear panel.

A box wrench works to tighten the nuts!
