Putting the head back on the block, my #2 stud is very tall and the rocker cover won't fit over it. I'm pretty sure I marked all the studs but for some reason this one sticks out. So the questions is which stud in the torquing sequence it the tall one? None of the diagrams show which are the 4 1/2" and 6 1/4". All the others seem to fit properly.

The four tall studs are the ones that pass through the rocker shaft pedestals (#s 2, 3, 6, 7). All the others are shorter.

The front & rear smaller dia studs for the rocker shaft pedestals are longer than the middle two. The longer studs there are for securing the rocker cover.

Thanks Eric, that's what I thought. But my #2 stud is taller than the other 3. I'm wondering if I got some gunk down there. I'll have to work on that.

Possibly the stud was not fully inserted? Normal process is to run the stud down until it bottoms then back off 1/4-1/2 turn.

Debris, mangled threads or even liquids (oil or coolant) in the stud hole can prevent it from fully threading in.

In reply to # 4788863 by ghnl Debris, mangled threads or even liquids (oil or coolant) in the stud hole can prevent it from fully threading in.

Threads were galled, ran a conical fine wire brush down the threads, sprayed with WD-40 and cleaned out, installed another stud to make sure it was clean and got it all put back together. Head and valve tappets are installed but not torqued yet.
