I have never purchased one coming out of long term managed storage and would like to know what you would recommend to inspect or change? I recently finished a body off-frame up restoration of a '58 MGA and have a pretty good mechanical skill set but am completely unfamiliar with the TDs.
I am asking as I just purchased a '52 MG TD from the collection of Robert W. “Kermit” Wilson who owned it since 1961 and restored it in the 1980s. It is one of 25 TDs produced in Germany with two known to be left. It was in prolonged climate-controlled storage prior to the Hagerty Auction. Before it was started they prepped (oil down cylinders, etc) it and cautioned the tires, belts and rubber are old and the auctioneer stated "will need other minor work to use these cars as a driver.." The car has 60,000 miles on it and I hope to take delivery in the coming weeks.

Thank you.

Look in archives on this and the mgcars.uk.org boards. Lots on there about the German TDs as well as reawakening stored cars. George

Replace all rubber - cooling hoses, brake hoses and seals, suspension bushings, tires. Lubricate all chassis fittings. Flush and refill all fluids. Then drive the car and replace leaky seals as needed.

Coincidentally, I'm doing exactly the same job on a TD at the moment.

Here is the link to the auction where I purchased the car. It has a lot of information about the German project. Also in the comments about this car being featured at the a "feature car" at the Amelia Island Concours d`Elegance back some years ago. Thanks for the interest.

There are German TD's and "German" TD's - many production TD cars were sold to GI's by German dealers like Woodhouse and Odendahl. They are quite different from true "German" TD's, sent by the factory as "chassis-only", and bodied in Germany with local bodies that tried to duplicate the MG body, but are different in almost every detail. Some, I remember, even had cast wiondshield frames!

Perhaps a decade ago I remember reading about someone who scored an original "German" TD cheaply from an industrial building being torn down, and did quite a bit of work on the German characteristics of these cars. He hoped for a big financial return and offered it up on eBay a few years later, and as I remember it MIGHT have cleared $10,000.

There were 2-3 of the true German made TDs at GOF South in 2016. Good article in The Sacred Octagon about the cars present. I have several other photos showing the difference. They have caused problems over the years when someone bought a TD, then needed to replace parts. Virtually the entire body is different. I remember the deal with the car Tom mentioned. I think Wayne Carini looked at one and passed as well. George
