For sale: One rebuilt Type D (3 synchro) overdrive gearbox rebuilt by Ken Quade of Quadteq LLC. We found this overdrive in a storage shed just outside of Chicago, and had it shipped to Ken for rebuilding. The overdrive looked to have never been disassembled before. The layshaft was damaged and the laygear bearing had failed. In addition, the laygear first gear was badly damaged as well as the first gear on the mainshaft. Finally, the oil filler plug had been badly mangled.

All of this and more has been corrected. Ken replaced the complete laygear and shaft assembly with an uprated version sourced from the UK, as well as the first gear and hub assembly. This gearbox - which was obviously noisy in reverse and first gears - is like new, which is to say precise and quiet, and the uprated laygear and shaft assembly will boost life expectancy from about 40K miles to 100K plus miles.

With respect to the overdrive component of our gearbox, the OD rear annulus bearing was noisy and has been replaced. Ken also ordered and installed a new shift lever, as the gearbox had been shipped with and had apparently been using the incorrect one which could lead to downstream problems if continued as there is a difference in the length from the fulcrum point to the bottom pivot point. The OD filter was clean, and it was obvious that the oil had been changed frequently. All of the synchro rings were like new, even though the transmission appeared to have never been apart. This is a later transmission; it has a steel synchro ring assembly. That is very good news because Type D overdrives were in continuous development during their tenure and the later gearboxes were stronger.

Price is $3999. Sold FOB Tybee Island, Georgia 31328. We accept PayPal, Venmo, and Zelle. We will gladly arrange truck freight shipping at cost.

Optional extras:

First, the correct driveshaft. Please let us know what kind of differential you have in your car so we can determine if this is necessary.

Second, the overdrive vacuum switch that was originally part of this overdrive system. This part is exceedingly rare, has not been made in three decades, and not necessary unless you're doing a concours restoration on your car (the judges will look for it).

Thank you for reading our advertisement.
