Solved
I have read over several earlier threads, and am a bit unsure about what end-float specification I should shoot for on a TD distributor.

Butch Taras states .002 -.005
Jeff Schlemmer states .005 -.007

I have one set up at .005, and am preparing to drive in the pin to fix the gear on the spindle.

Will this .005 be acceptable clearance?

I replaced the compressed fiber washer with a copper washer and have used two brass washers for the lower distance washer that faces the drive gear. Apologies for the inverted view of the assembly.

Both are correct, I aim for .005" as a maximum
I use Ford 1/2" ID steel lower shims from Summit Racing.

Len, do you think the brass will get chewed up by the lower gear pushing up on it?

That’s a kind offer. Are those in varied thickness options? I think what I’ll do is go ahead and stake the gear - as I’m trying to get this TD out the door. Thank you though for offering those. I’ll use the Summit steel ones you mention on my TD when I look at it next.

I wonder why Lucas had such a tight clearance? Probably due to fiber washers being used - which give a little over time.

Listen to Butch / Lucas. Tighter is better, up to a point. The timing will be affected as the gap grows.

Thanks Steve. I’ll have everything back together in another day or two. Anxious to see if my scattered readings settle - addressing several known issues.
