......that some one felt that movie needed to be made tells us all we need to know about ourselves...........dueling pistols at 6 am would achieve the same results with far less collateral damage.

It is clearly a comment on contemporary issues, but apparently they've done it well - they've sidestepped any sort of partisan labelling (for instance, by making one of the parties involved a "Western alliance" of California and Texas). Apparently you go through the film without really identifying a "team". Perhaps one of the rare ways in which artistic decisions agree with the commercial.

Anyone can go to see it, enjoy it - or find it uncomfortable - and reflect whether it's a future they would like.

Wife gave it a 4. I gave it a 7. Parts were pretty intense and violent.

Sounds like you are right in the ballpark Marc. IMDB and Metacritic both are giving scores in the mid 7s. Probably a solid film. Regardless, my wife and I will wait until it streams. She's actually the one who likes noisy and violent action and disaster films with lots of CGI. The politics and character development this film no doubt has she would be not as interested in. I suffered through Atomic Shark a few days ago. Myself, I will probably find the politics fascinating but just find the action and violence an unnecessary distraction. I'd rather watch something by Eric Rohmer or Hong Sang-soo...lol.

The way politics are California and Texas would not seem to be allied.
It looks like it would be very difficult to divide the country east/west.

It sounds to me like very much fiction vs anything resembling reality. Lots of artistic license. If you look up the Wikipedia article and click on "Plot" there's a map of the loyalist states plus the three rebel groups of states. It looks totally absurd based on current US politics and I have to think that's absolutely intentional.

This is deliberate, I believe. It gets you past the usual teams and on to considering the consequences of a nation divided along lines you can't relate to. If it reflected reality, your biases would kick in.

Not quite what I expected, and a bit of a disappointment as a result, although the action is pretty immersive. I wouldn't go out of your way to see it but as you say Rod, one to catch on streaming.

This review makes me interested in seeing the film and looking for things the author believes many viewers may be missing out on.

Still will wait for it on streaming.

Speaking of films, I saw an old Randolph Scott western last night that impressed me for a number of reasons. Coroner Creek (1947).
