First of all, I am definitely a shade tree mechanic. I've basically rebuilt everything on my 73 MGB, which I've owned for 25 years. I just dive in and figure it out. Recently after a repaint, including engine bay, the brake lights aren't working. Club members said probably a sticky plunger and I remember adjusting it at one time. Take the cover off and plunger works freely. Turn ignition switch on and lights are on. Lights are out when I push plunger in. I'm thinking, shouldn't it be the other way around? Then I realize when you push the break pedal in, the shaft going into the housing goes out, towards the cockpit and not in. So when you adjust the plug/plunger, you are making the plunger go in ( lights out) and when you press the break pedal, the plunger comes out, ( lights on).
So my point is, when explaining something to a novice, if you explain the very basics, it makes more sense sometimes.

One other detail of this switch. There is a free play setting for the pedal, this would have taken care of your installation. grinning smiley . Take a look at yours to mitigate switch failure.

Life's most persistent and urgent question is, "What are you doing for others?"
