Hi all,
Well the wife called at 7:30 AM to say the MGB left her stranded. I got dressed and headed out to meet her. Found it nearly empty of coolant. Source of leak was not readily apparent, but I had brought a gallon with me and was able to fill it. I drove it home, and when I got there, popped the hood and of course the heater control valve (Moss part only a few months old) was dripping steadily. Got her off to work in her other car, and started searching for alternative heater control valves. After a couple hours digging I found these two items, one MUCH cheaper then the other, both the same part it appears. Here are the links:

I ordered the second one. Both are 5/8" hose fittings, PULL -TO-CLOSE.

I will report back once I get the valve about it's quality and suitability.

I realize this is an old subject, and much can be found by searching the forum, but I do think this info could be useful....

Those will not directly replace the one on your car.
What you need looks more like these.
I believe that some folks have been able to make an adapter.

David,
I'm curious...

Did she see 'over-temp' on the gauge or smell coolant vapor?

Or is a 'high temp' alarm installed?

Regardless... Your wife must be well attuned to monitoring the running condition of engines to be able to recognize the problem brewing.

She deserves a dinner out and flowers for likely saving that newly rebuilt head.

I also looked hard and long at the various valve options out there. I settled on one that looks like yours, as in an in-line design that I'll place in the hose after fasioning a 90 degree bend on the pedastal of the old valve coming off the block. I've yet to implement it in the real world.

Since I don't care about controlling it from the cockpit, this is what Matt G built for me after a disaster with a regular heater valve, with 2000 miles on it (blew head gasket)

I much like the security of it, and will turn it off in about a month when it warms up.

My Moss-sourced heater valve only lasted six months.

I installed the Ashley-Hinton valve and so far it has outlasted the Moss valve by a factor of three.

Time will tell.

My heater valve was installed in 1976 and is still working. Any part can fail. These days, aftermarket parts do not have as good a reputation as OEM in any brand. The OEM valve on the MG does work, although if had been up to me, I would have placed the valve on the heater box, not the engine block.

Wow Greg, that's amazing for a 48 year old valve.

I think that your longevity speaks volumes regarding the quality of the old formulations used to make the soft goods for the valve and other parts.

My new Moss valve utilizing inferior rubber failed around six months, and I only used the heater a handful of times.

Hope you get another 48 years out of yours. smiling smiley
