Right hand drive. New brake/clutch shaft installation in process. When I took things apart inside the master cylinder heat protection box (which I totally do not understand since the master is outside the box) anyway the brake pedal return spring came out with the old pedal. Pretty sure it was attached to something as I've driven it a bit before starting the restoration. I cannot see or feel inside the box where the spring connects. In addition, with the pedal temporarily on the new shaft, the spring appears way too long for the non pedal end to attach inside the box.
Any guidance greatly appreciated.
Paul

Hi Paul,

The Pedal Box is not a heat protection box - I’ve never seen/heard of it referred to as such. It is simply a pedal box to enclose - and somewhat protect - the important function of the brake and clutch arms/shaft.

The spring attaches to a small tab located just forward of the brake pedal - at the lower right angle portion of the front face of the box.

You most likely have a good bit of grease, sand, goo in the box. Clean that out and you will most likely find the tab.

Here are some pictures from an earlier post by Lonnie Cook

Thanks for the quick response Jeffery. The first picture has a large opening in the bottom of the box. I presume that is not OE? I've had such a time with my fat hands trying to do anything inside that box that I was considering opening up the bottom and recovering with a plate similar to the side one. It would make it a lot easier to clean and gain access.

That hole was added on the later cars. Just grab a light and spray a can of carb cleaner in there and use an entire roll of paper shop towels cleaning it out. Cover your eyes with goggles though.

I had the same problem when I tried to fit this spring, which wasn't there when I bought my MG.
And as there were no traps or bellows on the clutch rod, it was full of dirt.

Hey Jeff: It's in there. My fat hand just will not fit into that small opening but I stuck my phone in there and snapped a picture.
