I need to check the oil/grease in the transmission on my 63B. I have heard that there is a dipstick for this. Where is it located on the tranny and how do I access it? Ounce I solve that question, what type and grade of oil do I top it off with??
Thanks, Thomas

The dipstick is accessed via a hole in the tunnel behind the radio console on the passenger or RH side. There should be a largish black plug covering the hole. When you get it out, consider looping a zip tie through the top of the dipstick to make pulling it out again easier
As for oil, that is a matter for strong debate! I use 20/50 engine oil.

Top of the tranny from the inside behind the console on the floor there will be a rubber plug which will allow access. Simply pull up the carpeting, remove the plug and pull. If there's no plug, then it'll be only accessible from under the car. Regardless...the same oil you fill the crankcase with is what you want to use in the gearbox; 20w/50.

73 MGB. Tires: Round, black, hold air. Oil: Sometimes old, sometimes new...always slippery. Oil filter: Yellow, usually full of oil. Carbs: 2 SU HIF. Distributor: Yes. Headlights: Not that bright but bright enough. A bunch of other stuff most cars have but not really important enough to itemize. Oh, wait...it has a cool sounding exhaust with stickers on the chrome tips. Really slays the ladies...

Use one of these to fill it after you drain it and let it sit for several hours to fully drain before installing the drain plug.
I have a feeling it's nOT been done in many a year.
Screws onto a Qt. Bottle of conventional 20w50 oil.
Takes about 5.5 pints to fill from empty so after draining put in less and check level after a short drive let sit till cool and check level and top off to upper mark on dipstick.

Although James eluded to it, no one has mentioned that the later MGBs used a side-fill transmission and the dipstick was deleted.

But the OP states he has a 63 B. Top fill and dip stick.

He also has a 5 main engine installed in his 1963 so being certain the trans is a top fill is fraught with confusion until otherwise confirmed.

True...but I also looked at his profile and did not see the year of car....and....there are other who read this thread who may not know that the later Bs do not have the dipstick.....this is a learning tool for all.

It looks like I'm too late for you, Thomas, but I'll post this tip anyway. I bought a hibernating '70B last March which had been sitting for years, at least 8 and possibly 15+.
I bent a piece of 1/8" diameter (3+mm) steel rod into an "S", where one end was considerably smaller than the other. The small end is for hooking on the finger loop on top of the dipstick. I could not get the dipstick to budge by simply pulling vertically, and was exerting more force than I was comfortable with, afraid of injuring my finger. I began turning it counterclockwise to see if the dang thing was threaded. This brought to mind a trick I had figured out years ago, turning it while pulling. I got it out without exerting much vertical force at all. It required several revolutions, maybe 15 at the most. IIRC, it has 2 O-rings.

Bent screwdriver gearbox dipstick remover.
That's like dejavu, Kenny. I have a screwdriver bent almost exactly like that with a red/clear handle. I made it almost 40 years ago to break loose radiator hoses.
