The pan needs to be dropped due to the relationship between the front cover and front of the pan.
See shop manual section 01.B6 Sometimes the pan gasket gets trashed and needs replacing.

On some cars (even those with manual gearboxes), the sump cannot be totally removed from under the engine with the engine in-situ.

This is even with the engine hoisted off its mounts as high as it will go and with front cover off.

This makes the whole job messy and difficult, but not impossible. I found a cordless impact driver (or drill with torque set *low*) with a long 1/4" extension and socket useful for doing the sump bolts. Oil pump probably need to come off as well or else you'll need to somehow get the gasket around it without tearing it. Have fun!

Although it's a "bigger" job, pulling the engine is in many ways easier and will give you more confidence that things are done 'right'.
Presumably just nipping up the front cover bolts a bit tighter hasn't helped in the short term? Cheers

I have always pulled the engine for this type of work. Not saying the pan gasket can't be replaced with the engine in the car. It's just not my personal way of doing things. Laying under the car tying to place a pan gasket upside down in limited access usually results in a leaky outcome.

Ditto the above. Not a fast easy. VERY superior rear seals are also in market.
