You don't need a pro to jack your memory. I have a relative that is pleasant but she has told stories she made up for so many years that she actually believes them to be true. Things from having cancer (which she did not) to things which people said and did which I and other family members know to be untrue. Sometimes we just look at each other in disbelief at what we just heard. Now about that fity bucks you owe me......member?

This actually happens a lot more than we realize. Ever rewatch a film you saw 30 or 40 years ago and "remember" something that was in the film that mysteriously is missing on second viewing? With time and reinforcement it's pretty easy to change what we remember.
When three older people talk about events they mutually experienced together in their youth, how often do their versions of the story match? Not often.
We all process and modify the same or similar events differently. With "assistance" it would be quite simple to totally change a perception. It's a fascinating and scary subject, and I do take it very seriously, Wyatt.
Friends talking around a fire is the history of mankind.

In a psychology class, we students were required to interview our parents, or siblings in the case of our parents having passed, about our memories of our growing up years. Called "Family of Origin Studies", the interview questions we were given were pretty standard, but could obviously lead to other questions
Since my parents had passed, I interviewed my brother & sister, whom I have very good relationships with.
I was amazed at how some of my memories of our lives growing up together were different than their recollections. Some were things that one knew and the other didn't remember, but some were outright disagreements about something that happened. Most interesting were differences in our overall views of that period in our lives.
The older the memory, the more it is prone to be "enhanced" either voluntarily or involuntarily.
“Ideological certainty easily degenerates into an insistence upon ignorance". Daniel Patrick Moynihan
In any debate, the side which strays from civil discussion is usually the side that lacks confidence in its debate position or in the merit of their arguments. Making personal attacks on the opponents instead of staying on the subject is also a sign of weakness.
Anyone who feels compelled to respond in kind to any perceived slight is often suffering from narcissism.

Hmm..............brainwashing as a science......................facebook as a distribution medium.............just add thought police, and Orwell's work is done.

1968 MGB Purchased already dis-assembled but which is largely back together so I'm a lot less ignorant.

...if its available on line I suggest that you all take a hour of your day to watch it, then read my linked article....we watched semi dropped jawed last nite...but we had no heads up, which may account for some of the intense scrutiny..
and yes melbaver,(or was that melbecky??) I agree, but imho the good that can come from the science must let it proceed, but with every caveat under the sun that you can....think of...

How do you remember that?
