So, I've had this pop-up on my computer offering a free upgrade to Windows 10. I'm running Windows 7 and am satisfied with it but the pop-up touts all kinds of great things available with Windows 10.

I'm usually reluctant to do upgrades because they always seem to create more problems than they solve. However, if there is a consensus that Windows 10 is the greatest thing since sliced bread I might give it a try.

There's only a short time left for the free upgrade. When it ends I hope the pop-ups will cease and I can stop even thinking about upgrading.

I'm looking for opinions from anyone with experience with Windows 10. Is Windows 10 a worthwhile improvement over Windows 7?

Thanks.

It is not the greatest thing since sliced bread, but it's pretty decent.

I upgraded from win 8. 10 was better than 8. I now run 7 - make of this what you will!

I'm wondering about this also. Currently 7. Thing is, I use a desktop so rarely that it's not a huge deal.

"Up-Grade?" I get that dog & pony show, too (W 7 here).

Windows 10 uses a beta feature that tracks you not unlike Google. It's a money-making scam for Microsoft, and YOU are their product. There are numerous complaints about privacy settings (if you care about that) that one has to UNDO instead of do. Plenty of articles online about this scam from the tech sites.

I still haven't forgiven Gates for THIS abomination...

I upgraded to W10 a couple of weeks ago. At least for me, there's not a whole lot of difference between it and W7. Of course, I probably won't ever use half of its capabilities.

The only annoying issue I have had is when turning off the computer. It will turn off and then, sometimes, it will start back up on its own.

Dave. as a general rule guys who drive 50-year-old cars are a little suspicious of highly-tauted advances in technology--like the next best iPhone or an Internet-connected refrigerator. I'm with you, brother. But when it comes to fundamental operating system upgrades you have to go with flow or you find that you get locked out of vital technology. Not all Microsoft operating systems have been successful, but the general consensus is that Windows 10 is a winner. It is very stable, has a slew of new features, and offers a traditional Windows interface. If you simply allow it to do so it will install itself over the old OS while incorporating all your documents, programs, and settings into the new one. furthermore, it's FREE!

I had three Windows 7 computers at home, one PC and two laptops. I opted for Windows 10 and, after a very short learning curve, am very happy with the experience.

I also have a very solid, but out-dated IBM Thinkpad with XP (I need it for the serial port required to tune my Jaguar.) It was well regarded in its day, but I can hardly find software that will work with it. Major Anti-virus programs object to its either it's dated hardware or the XP code. Firefox blocks me from most Internet use. I can't even go to Microsoft.com!

I recommend that you just do it, Dave. Get Win 10 now, or get it when you buy your next computer.

I converted about two months ago primarily because I understand that Microsoft is going to quit supporting Windows 7 in the not too far distant future and so far it has gone very well and it is easy to adapt to. The only problem I have run into is that my online bank account is not Windows 10 compatible yet and I have to use Firefox to log in. Otherwise it is fine for me.

I've been using 10 since it was first offered. The issues aren't is it better or worse or that it tracks everything--It's that you'll eventually need to upgrade when support stops for earlier versions. Might as well do it now while it's free.

It helps to understand why it was developed. It's meant to be compatible with the way the younger generations want to access and share information. It's very social media oriented. Which is why its default settings allow for extensive tracking...just like an iPhone. Tracking makes sharing information on social media much more efficient. Like it or not, it's what the younger generations want and what they're used to. It's what 10 is designed to do.

If you're upgrading from 7 you'll have a more difficult time adjusting than if upgrading from 8.

Personally, I have very little use for social media and therefore little use for Windows 10 tracking. The first thing I did after downloading 10 was to turn off all tracking. When I did it, it took a few steps and needed to be done in a couple different areas within Windows. It's now easier than it was. It was simplified after consumer complaints about the difficulty.

If you're an old curmudgeon like me, you'll want to turn off tracking. But if you're really into the social media thing, its default settings will make it easy for you.

I upgraded from W7 and it was like I just got an updated version of W7. No trouble at all adjusting to it since it is so similar. No screen full of small windows like W8.

I'll hold onto W7 as long as I can. MSN only stopped supporting XP not that long ago so I'm thinking I have some time left...
