I've a friend with a TD that has a seriously ailing transmission. It shifts like a pre syncromesh transmission.
Does anyone know if an MG B transmission is a direct swap?
Thanks

It is not. Your (his) options are to

1 rebuild the gearbox... he may just need to slow down his shifts...

2 try changing out to RedLine MT 90 gear oil.... helped my TD gear box quite a bit

3 pony up for a 5 speed.

Thanks much. I'll suggest the lube change and then we'll reassess the options... likely it will require rebuilding.

First is not synconized. But that said you can't shift these like a modern gearbox. I found that out even after an overhaul.

Up shifts on one of these is a two step process...move the selector to neutral ..slight pause...then move to the desired gear. You are basically allowing the input shaft to slow down and match the next gear speed....kinda like shifting without using the clutch if you ever had to do so. Down shifts ....same two step process however double clutching can be benificial but the reality is you need to raise the input shaft speed (engine rpm) to match the speed of the lower gear. Since 1st in non syncro , you should not attempt to engage it while moving. If fact the best method for engaging 1st or reverse is to move the lever to either 2nd, 3rd or 4th. Once engaged it will stop the spinning input shaft and allow a smooth transition to first or reverse.
