I put new generator brushes in the TD a few days ago, and the generator seems to be working fine. But, I was reading thru the Lucas Technical training manual, and it said that when you install new brushes, you should put "glass cloth" between the comutator and the brushes, and rotate the armature for a while to shape the brushes to the commutator. Should this be done? I never heard of doing this before. ?? The workshop manual claims that the new brushes are "...preformed, so no bedding to the commutator is necessary." (pg N.6) Of course they were talking about OEM brushes. Any thoughts?

I have never done that step in rebuilding the generators and have never had any problems. Keep in mind the time frame that information was printed. My bet is if you went to any auto electric shop (if you can find one now days), they would that they never bothered with that step.

Believe me, the brushes will wear and conform to the commutator surface very quickly. There's no need to do anything special, even if the brushes have flat ends.

This is one thing you don't need to worry about. Drive your car and enjoy it!
