Of course not, they serve no purpose. The UJ's in the drive shaft flanges have none either. grinning smiley

PS Once rear leafspring assemblies were contained in leather containers, sewn around them. For looks or a reason now lost to us? This practice died out even at Jaguar where they stayed for a little longer than elsewhere on British cars.

i just thought it would keep the dirt and grime to a minimum.

Probably over thinking it....too much time on my hands at work.

Thanks.

Bill,
These are sealed joints, the dirt & grime will do no harm to the joint, why worry ?

FWIW this joint is pretty much invisible due to carburetors.

Think about the festive season that is just around the corner smiling smiley

Common practice on industrial joints but would only be cosmetic here.

There is a purpose built one available.

1968 MGB Purchased already dis-assembled but which is largely back together so I'm a lot less ignorant.

Melbaver if you've got that touching your universal you need to start again! That's for the end of the column inside the car and it has a ribbed lip on the large end for going onto the hole in the bulkhead but other than that no protrusion into engine bay.

Geez Barrie, who's having Senior's moments now? The head of the boot goes in the hole and the ribbed/accordion part is on the outer steering shaft inside the cockpit. Put it in the other way and it would be shredded in days.

No I was not entertaining the OP's thoughts.

Steering column to bulkhead (#17 here) - it doesn't move - it provides a shroud between the outer column and the bulkhead so no fumes etc get in.

And FWIW don't forget #BHA4536 for the other side - it's a bigger version of the plastic grommets that go over the barrel screws holding the 1/4 light frame (and other places too). I now have a BHA4536 but originally mine was a metal blanking plate about the thickness of a tin can held on by two screws - might have been a PO fix.
