Should I be concerned about the paint chipping?

So I noticed the paint on the hood has been chipping and it's getting a bit worrying for me. It's been raining a lot and I don't have a garage to store it in.

Should I get a car cover and cover it when I'm not driving?

Also I noticed the paint wasn't done well either. Would it make sense to get both the trunk and hood repainted?

Thanks!

That's the clearcoat self destructing. Time to paint the entire car. That's one of the reasons I don't like paint systems that require a clearcoat to shine. Covering the car won't help as the clearcoat is already failing. sad smiley

One steps are normally cheaper as well. Omni makes a good one step if you are not sure what to buy, just look around for some good UV additives to mix in so it lasts out in the sun. I used it on a few projects which are around 10 years old and still look great.

Not sure if it's acid rain, but it's definitely raining a lot this past week, which is good since we need the water after the drought this year.

I'm sure I won't have to worry about much rust though right? Also if I repaint would I need to strip it to bare shell or would just the outside be fine?

Specially in hot climates lighter colors hold up better because they reflect the heat of the sun off. On a sunny day find a black car and a white car and put your hand on both, big difference.

Purists will tell you to strip it bare, but you can get away with scuffing it level again and spraying over the old paint. With your car you must remove the clearcoat since it is cracking that will effect the new paint, but you can leave the paint underneath. Make sure you use a good primer as well, the new urethane ones work great and you can even roll most of them on which is nice when you don't have a booth.

You have a really nice car. Unfortunately all of the clear coat will have to be removed.
If your sticking with black any minor imperfections will jump out and look terrible.
Clearcoats frequently fail but it's always because something wasn't done right.
If properly applied they hold up well on lighter colored cars but seem more prone
to failure on dark colored cars in hot climates. If it's not all removed it will continue
to fail under your new finish and ruin it. This is one instance where it would be foolish
to cut corners. I'd strip it down and go with a good single stage black.
Save your money until you can afford to do it right.

Thanks for the advice! Thankfully I live in California where it doesn't get too extreme in terms of weather but I'll definitely keep an eye on the clear coat.

How old is that paint job, Jing? I know it was on your car when you debuted on MGE. I wouldn't think clearcoat could deteriorate that fast if the paint finish was applied properly within the past 5-6 years.

Bad UV inhibitors. Just look at all modern Chrysler products once they get close to a decade old.

That's a great question David. The guy who sold it to me said it was in the same color when he got it back a few years ago. The clear coat only started to have issues this year around the summer or so.
