Ashame...I know Marysville well. Lived in Everett and loved the Tulip festival up there. Nice community...

73 MGB. Tires: Round, black, hold air. Oil: Sometimes old, sometimes new...always slippery. Oil filter: Yellow, usually full of oil. Carbs: 2 SU HIF. Distributor: Yes. Headlights: Not that bright but bright enough. A bunch of other stuff most cars have but not really important enough to itemize. Oh, wait...it has a cool sounding exhaust with stickers on the chrome tips. Really slays the ladies...

Terrible... every time I hear about school shootings, especially since knowing parents who had children at Sandy Hook I am reminded of this thread.

Ive said this before and here we go again! The media needs to take partial blame for these shootings putting ideas in sick minds and is a "monkey see monkey hear monkey do" type situation. Then everyone stands around remorseful and wondering what to do. They planted cops in some of these schools that are obviously not getting the job done. Only solution that comes to mind is metal detectors at all entrances
and a dedicated individual to monitor cameras thru out the facility. They sure as hell use metal detectors in official buildings/airports right?
So howbout putting some of that fat school funding for something to protect your kids, or are the shake down cops more valuble than your children?

It is a very sad day for the community of Marysville or any community that has to go through such a dramatic mess.
Having now been in the educating biz for 40 years, your comments about fat funding for school are respectfully your opinions, but are about as far from the truth as something can get.
And the shake down cops comment, well I'll let others have their input.

I just shake my head...I literally "don't get it".
The ONLY thing I can think of is how I'd react if it were MY kids in that school. I'm not an "emotional" type person...but when kids(yours OR mine) are involved it bothers me. My youngest graduated HS last year. The oldest 8 years ago. Even then, it seems I was saying to myself that I was glad they were on the upside of their public education.
The interactions I had with some of the teachers...who were my classmates...were that they had a sense that some of the issues with violence had it's ties to the kids fearing the repercussions of what at one time was simply being "called out". Let me explain; By "fear" I mean when many of us were in high school 25+ years ago...IF we had an "issue" with another kid...we sometimes duked it out. WE established a "pecking order" in some cases. We'd get into scraps, get a bloody nose...you know what I'm talking about. At the end of the day we went home and MAYBE parents got called, we were called into the principal...maybe a day suspension...that type of stuff. NOW...the minute some kid lays a hand on another...the cops are involved. Parents want to press charges for what is simply a "school yard fight" in some circumstances. Teachers can't even get involved for fear of getting sued. Rather than handling an issue things build up. There's social media now. Cyber-bullying. There's nowhere to "hide". We only had a phone. If you didn't want to talk to someone...you simply didn't dial them up. Vice-versa...you didn't answer the phone or if you did, you hung up and disconnected it.
It seems now, kids simply can't even take refuge in the safety of their own rooms. They will be the topic of conversation on FB or whatever. What was an issue between two individuals now becomes providence of their entire class to gossip about...literally overnight.
"Bullying" isn't new. We all had them...or were them...however NOW, there's no escaping them. You can run...you can hide...but you cannot avoid any longer. Eventually some of these kids "snap". It's emotional overload.
I don't know...It just bothers me and I feel bad that kids now almost can't be "kids" like we knew of.
Sad day.

It is another sad day for schools in Washington. It would seem they are open to assault. The kids at that school will never feel safe there again. In the coming days there will be studies, investigations, recriminations, there will be new laws, and nothing will change.
What is alarming is the shooters are young students, how long since Columbine? This isnt gettting better, its getting worse.

I think the only difference between the kids of today, and back when I was a kid, is that the kids of today are being pumped full of SSRI drugs. Add that to the normal pressures of growing up, is there any surprise when stuff like this happens.

It's more than that. The standards of what is acceptable by society has changed. Without hijacking the thread, think of the things that acceptable now that were never tolerated 50 years ago.

I think you are seeing kids pumped full of violence on TV and video games. None of which is needed. Having said that, no one is willing to take on the first amendment implications.

So, are you saying that rights should have responsibilities too?

What Im saying it that the first out of the box accusations are going to come from anti 2 amendment groups who popoff about their first amendment rights at every corner.
These kids grow up with violence, its second nature to them. From video games to tv its there. Short of curtailing violence, metal detector should be required at every door in todays public schools.
