Asking for a friend.

My 1974MGB GT had the IMG_7940 style rear end in it. Do the rubber bumper MGBs have the one as shown in IMG_7939?

Thanks,

Bill

No, img7939 is the banjo rear axle assembly used on the early B's. All GT's came with the tube axle as did all RB B's.

Thanks Zach. That means that you would still need a case stretcher to remove the differential gears from the rear end of a RB MGB whether a tourer or grand tourer.

Quote: need a case stretcher

The case stretcher shown in the manuals is designed to help you remove the differential carrier. It is not strictly necessary, as you can remove the carrier with a suitable pry bar, being careful not to damage the gasket surface of the case. You would need to remove the carrier to change the ring and pinion, but not to change the differential gears inside the carrier.

You don't need to pry the diff out. 2 methods.

1 remove axle and clamp on bench nose down. Place loads on the ends of the axle and it will spread the casing.

2 what I did. Support car on axle stands. Remove half shafts undo bearing caps. Rotate input shaft and the thrust will push the diff out. To reassemble I used the bearing caps and bolts to pull the diff back into the casing.
