I have a "69 roadster. Was taking apart the rear axle to put on new thrust washers. Pretty easy to get apart, but I have a question.
The thrust washer on the planetary gears that go on the half axle, was brass, or at least looked like brass. The replacement was a fiber washer like I have read about, and just a bit thicker, which was good. Is that normal for the original thrust washer to be brass?
Thanks,
Gary

The original thrust washers were bronze. They are much longer lasting (thus preferable).

Thanks Eric. Bronze it is. But it is a tube type 69 axle with the bronze thrust washer. It is the original wire wheel axle. Is it normal to have the bronze washer on the newer style axle or was it possibly replaced with a bronze washer at some time? At least I know that the fiber washer is ok to replace it with. It is much tighter in the gears now, so that is good.

Gary,
When I did my differential there were no thrust washers on the axle.
I believe the originals were fiber and wore away. I tried to source some bronze ones so
this wouldn't happen again but no luck, so I went with the phenolic ones from Moss.
