I've just installed a black folding top frame on my 1969 MGB, ready for a soft top installation in a couple of weeks. It folds back nicely, and misses my wind breaker OK. However it doesn't fold down lower than the rear cockpit molding which means that any top frame cover will not be flat but bulge upwards. Is this correct? I can't see anyway that the folding frame (black) can go any lower.

It should lay back nicely provided the top is properly folded prior to being fully stowed.

If you look at the front bow You will notice that it sits on its edge when folded back . You can put a twist in the ends so the armature (the very front bit with clips) locates on flat surface and the top drops an inch or 3 lower. This also protects your new roof from the edge.
Also, sometimes you must make sure that bow, and the rear one, is laying horizontal, it will sometimes get out of position, especially without a top to fold into and hold it,

They do stick up a little. If the didn't, I'd put a cover lid that folded out of the way, like on my Mercedes 450SL, to cover the whole thing up, protecting it from the elements, like U.V rats, and Bird poop. It would really clean up the cars looks. Looks good with the cover on too though. smiling smiley

also try this for tops with the corner windows.

many people prefer to use velcro or clips for the rear bow flap. The glue I tried came unstuck in the summer. That top gets hot in the sun.

I have no rear corner windows (like the RV8 and every other recent convertible ) so I don't have to do all this folding and clipping. Just throw it back or pull it up from the drivers seat, about 10 seconds worth. I would recommend leaving them out and also having a zip down rear centre window. Aside from ease of use it extends the life of the roof.

mine does as well. but, when you put on the tonneau cover/boot cover it pushes it down a little and doesn't show as bad as you may think it will. gotta use the support bar though, which helps as well.

My 69 B folds down just below the cockpit moulding, but it came from the factory with a GRAY folding frame.

I've found that the moveable rib position is critical to how the top folds. If it is pointing down or horizontally, the top doesn't fold correctly. If I make sure that the ends of that rib are pointing up, it folds down nicely and the boot cover is then easy to install.

Great tutorial. I wish though that he had pulled the tonneau bars from their storage space on the left side of the trunk above the wheel well rather than pulling them from out of the main part of the trunk.

I installed a Prestige canvas top with a glass rear window. The glass lays on the rear shelf and the top folds down and leaves nothing sticking up. Much nicer than the original, and you can see what's behind you!

Chris, I must admit that I don't understand this, unless it's a joke that I'm missing (not unusual). What does the storage location of the tonneau bars have to do with the OP's question? And where did anyone mention tonneau bars?

In the video, John opens the trunk and finds the tonneau bag with bars sitting center over the spare tire. He then installs the bars so the tonneau could be put on over the folded top. I'm thinking that there are a lot of people who follow Mr. Twist as gospel, and are unaware that there is a dedicated storage place for the bars and bag. Ergo, it would have been instructive if he had pulled said bars and bag from the legit storage place.
It has to do with the video that was offered up as correct top folding and storage.
